First time I heard of Hover and just having something similar to JSR pretty much made me sold. Looking forward to that.
One of the kickstarters i'm looking forward to is called Hollow Knight (nothing to do with Shovel Knight). It may not look revolutionary or new, but my god is that art and world fantastic.
Maybe it's because it's outside the US, but i'm enjoying the getting a Mii or two a day here on Colombia at my university. Then again, only one so far has been from my country, while the rest are from students from the US, Canada and Brazil.

I got used to the Gamepad quickly. Helps that I have hands that fit nicely.
As far as I know, making an ID doesn't screw up any transfer from the Wii and it's not necessary to do a transfer if you don't want to.

"you know the old Cartoon Network...before it got shitty" You've never seen Adventure Time, Regular Show or Young Justice, have you? Of course, modern cartoon network has some problems, but atleast they've stopped with the live-action.
Anyway, very much looks like it was dumbed down. I don't know why they did that as I think it could have been done on 3D, even if it would mean having downgraded graphics.

But more to the point, I still don't see Nintendo calling it quits. Last year the Wii U had its best year, even surpasing temporally the Xbone and if VgChartz isn't wrong, the 3DS is second in best sold consoles so far. Call me positive, but it's better than the hate mongering ala Polygon (they are really hating on Nintendo lately), and I see Nintendo holding up well if not being the king thanks mostly to a dedicated fanbase and sales around the holidays.
As for the kids, I would say it mostly has to do with them probably not knowing about Streetpass or not caring. Like Peter also said above me, I also don't think they have forgotten about Nintendo and if I have to say something, it may depend where you are.
I'm still thinking on getting a Vita, though i'm not sure when with the new 3DS now avaiable. I do want it for playing Persona 4, Gravity Rush and the two Danganronpa games, and also check the classic PS1 library and PSP games I may have missed. It also helps that Sony actually put their virtual shop on Colombian territory last year and Nintendo hasn't so far.
