Casey Ranks Mario Games

Posted on 09/05/2014 at 11:04 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Super Mario Bros. 3 will never be toppled in my eyes. Maybe if World actually did something with its world map, like what 3 did by turning the map into a game itself, it would challenge 3. Both are perfect vidoe games, but 3 is just a little bit perfecter.

I loathe 3D platformers, so none of those would make the list, except maybe 3D World since there is a bit more (but not much more) precision required.

New Targets, Same Old Bullshit

What a loser sub-cult we have with this hobby. I'm beginning to believe few among the audience or press even have the intelligence to speak fluently about a medium as complex as video games, so we get this ancillary garbage instead.  We are seeing the chickens come home to roost with the people involved in this kind of nonsense. This may be the last time I comment on anything that has nothing to do with design, development, history, or the market/sales.

Games Are Too Bloody Long!

Too many size queens in the video game audience. Like children, they believe that more is better, regardless of whether it hurts the overall design.  Usually the games are long because of uninteresting 'filler.' Think back to Contra - it had no filler, it was relentless. Same with the Mega Man games, Super Mario 3, Chrono Trigger.  I think developers got the duraton-to-cost ration just right during the PS1 days. MGS, RE1 and 2, Final Fantasy 9, etc. were perfect length for what they were.  In the PS2 era, I started to notice games outstaying their welcome, even good ones. Every GTA had to be bigger than the last. RE4 peaked in the castle, then it became an endurance test to the end.  I'll take efficient and holistic design over size/length any day.

Must be the Ghibli influences in these two games. The battle system is taking a beating in the comments. What did you think of it?

More thumbs down for the battle system. Apparently it takes anywhere from 75 to 95 hours to get all trophies. I hope this is a case of 'to each their own,' or it's going to be quite the chore.

My complete ignorance of Pokemon should prevent that form being a strike against it, but combat seems to be the Achilles heel of this game for people. I'm a bit worried, to be honest.

I hope I like the combat.  Don't need anymore tedium going for platinum already entails.

Suggest Co-op & Multiplayer games please--all systems.

More like Extreme Tron. Those are light cycles without the light.
