Pizza Pixel Podcast Episode 13: Top Five Favorite 2-D Platformers

I do like Odin Sphere and Muramasa a lot.  It's hard for me to classify those as plastformers because you seem to do more hack and slashing in those.  I liked playing as that Valkyrie character in Odin Sphere.

The new 2D Rayman games were very good, too.  They had excellent controls.

That cabinet is neat.  I have that Pac-Man tabletop and FF7 figures in storage somewhere.

I reviewed one of the Inazuma games that came to the US on the 3DS.

November 2022 Recap

I never got into Costume Quest.  You'd think I would, but the battles just didn't draw me in like a Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi game does.

I have a physical copy of TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, too.  It's a very good game.

Willow Review

Posted on 12/01/2022 at 08:25 AM | Filed Under Review

I rented the Willow game a couple of times as a kid and was pretty impressed with it.  But then, I was a bigger fan of Capcom's NES gamse than Nintendo's own back then.  I think there's a new Willow series on Disney+ now.  I watched the original movie a couple of times as a kid but it's been a very long while so I don't remember much about it.

Yeah I rented Mischief Makers once.  It was fun, even if I did have the same problems with it as I did other Treasure games.

The N64 was really lacking in 2-D platformers.  The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Yoshi's Story, Mischief Makers, Kirby 64, and Goemon's Great Adventure.  I hate that I missed out on that last game.  It came out when I was just graduating college so I was still poor and couldn't afford to buy it, and it was also really rare, even back then!

Stage Select:

Well I did give you all a superhero game idea a few podcasts ago, but NOOO, you all rejected it, you big meanies!  Just joking!  But yeah, do you remember my idea about a superhero who has no superpowers except he or she can turn anything they touch into a superhero?  So if you needed to rescue a cat from a tree, just touch the tree and it'll turn into Super Tree and save the cat.  Just be careful not to touch too much stuff or you'll have a world full of super toilets.  I think that would make a silly comic book or cartoon, and even a sillier video game.  I like that you all said it was like Katamari Damacy the last time I sent you that idea.

Cage Match:

I've never played either game.  Not really a big fan of Spiderman.

PlayDate Update: Part 2

Posted on 11/24/2022 at 08:11 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Yeah the three games you mentioned are definitely some of the better titles in this batch.  I took a survey from PlayDate recently and they asked how much I'd be willing to pay for a season 2.  If they ever did one, I hope it doesn't cost too much!

The LEGO Movie video game is pretty standard LEGO stuff.  The movie is fantastic, though.  Pixar quality in my opinion.

The movie sequel wasn't near as good, but at least they tried something different with that game.

2010 Rewind

Posted on 11/20/2022 at 11:53 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I think the reason why we don't see any Prof. Layton games anymore is that Level 5, the makers of those games, is just as concerned about marketability as well as making good games.  Have you noticed their last few projects have had anime cartoon tie ins?  Their most successful one in recent memory was Yokai Watch.

I don't know what Warren Spector is doing now, but I bet it's not making video games after the failure of Epic Mickey 2.  He also wanted to make a DuckTales game but Capcom made DuckTales Remastered about that same time so I bet that's why he didn't do that.  Too bad he couldn't make a DuckTales game based on the reboot.

One frustrating thing for me during the roundtable is that everyone else wanted to ask hiim about Deus Ex, another game he made, and not Epic Mickey 2.  At least I got to squeeze in a couple of questions about the game we were supposed to be there for.
