Well, I can see your point on the holiday, but on the sports part I don't think they are much different from the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games and/or the opening or final of the FIFA World Cup, and those have much more theatrics than the Super Bowl.

Both Super Mario Galaxy. I pretty much made a blog on the last day of BaD 2014 detailing my love for them which cover the core aspects. But, I should add that at the same time, the first game made me realize how much there was to a game other than fun and I started to also see games as experiences. I think both games (mostly the first) made my love of gaming evolve.

Well, I just decided to spend the day with a friend and put the SuperBowl out of boredom and slight interest and I gotta say that was a close game. I was rooting a bit for Seattle, but in the end I didn't care who won and hey, congrats to the Patriots.

I honestly can't give a good opinion since I think I only visited Joystiq once to read their Gears of War 3 review but nothing else since then. That said, shame to see them go if they were different from the norm. Maybe if I had visited the site more, I would still prefer it over clickbaity Kotaku or drama queen Polygon, but i'm just talking out of my ass here.
