The Racers and Tracks of Chocobo GP

That's one bad thing about the Switch is there are no achievements or trophies, but that might be a good thing in some cases, too.

RETROspective: Bomberman's Explosive History

Posted on 05/08/2022 at 08:35 AM | Filed Under Blogs

You know, you'd think I would like Bomberman games since they're all about running around in mazes chasing after things, and I like those kinds of games.  But I've never been able to get into Bomberman much for some reason.

I did buy Super Bomberman back in the day, but mainly because I wanted the included SNES Multitap so I could play three player Secret of Mana.

I would like to play some of the side games, like the kart racers, mini-game collections, and puzzle gamess featuring Bomberman, but I never got around to it.  Can't play 'em all!

I do think it's interesting that Nintendo shoehorned Wario into a Bomberman game once.  Also, Hudson MIGHT have copied the idea of Bomberman from a Namco game called Warp & Warp.

I hate it that Konami kind of squelched Hudson Soft.  Good thing most of the employees left to work at Nintendo!

Trog is awesome.  I never played the NES version, which is what is advertised here, but I did play the arcade version a lot.  I liked the arcade version because of course it played like Pac-Man, but I also liked the clay animated graphics it had as well.  I read somewhere that once Trog was going to be a totally different game and play more like Lemmings, but they thought that would be too complicated for an arcade game and changed it to play more like Pac-Man instead.  There was an arcade locally called Nickel Mania that let you play arcade games for super cheap, and for some reason, Trog was always set to Free Play, so that's how I played it a lot!  :)

Yeah I was surprised, too!  When I first heard about how this game makes you buy some characters, I thought to myself, 'yeah they'll make me want to buy characters by having Terra be one of them.'  But to my surprise, you unlock her right in the game in Story Mode!  Fairly early, too.  So I was very happy about that.  Like I told KnightDriver, you can play a free trial version of the game called Chocobo GP Lite if you want to check it out.

If you try Chocobo Lite, you'll have to tell me what you think.

Not dead yet

Good to see you back here.

I am going to wait and maybe ask for the new LEGO Star Wars game for my birthday.  I usually get to review all the LEGO games, but not this one for some reason.

I stopped playing Animal Crossing New Horizons.  I usually play those games everyday for a full year.  And then I stop.  I started it up again in the fall when they added the Happy Home Paradise stuff and played for a couple more months, but stopped for good after that.  I still play the mobile game, though.

I really like the point and click game from TellTale.  Sam & Max, Tales of Monkey Island, Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, etc.

New Pokemon Snap was my Game of the Year last year.  I think it's cool that Namco made it.

I'm playing Pokemon Legends Arceus right now, and it's like Pokemon mixed with Breath of the Wild.

Ori and the Blind Forest got too hard later on, so I probably won't play the sequel.

I played SaGa Frontier on the PSOne and it was a hot mess.

I reviewed Chrono Cross for The Dallas Morning News back in the day.  It was a good game on its own, but not a worthy sequel to Chrono Trigger.  It was a cleverly disguised deck building card game.  I'm kind of interested in the remaster because I hear they included Radial Dreamers, the Super Famicom Satelliview text adventure.  I've always wanted to try it.  I've heard Chrono Cross is based more on Radical Dreamers than Chrono Trigger.  If you do want to try an RPG that plays more like Chrono Trigger, try I Am Setsuna.

April 2022 Recap

Yoshi's Crafted World was no where near as good as Yoshi's Woolly World, but it was still a good game.

I beat The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles right on time, as the day after, Kirby and the Forgotten Land came out!

Month of Board Games: Stratego

When I first saw Stratego, it looked like chess so I passed up on it.  I learned how to play chess from Battle Chess.  Another thing I learned from playing Battle Chess is that I do not like chess.

Episode 222: It's a Great Lake, But it Ain't a GREAT Lake

Well I'm disappointed that Tetris didn't make it, but I can't complain about making up your own rules.  It's your podcast, and I certainly do stuff like that for mine!  So who would win in the finals?  Well, both games have pluck.  And both games have been re-released lately.  And both games hold special places in my heart as games I got to review for The Dallas Morning News.  But like how Mario Odyssey got my vote against Chrono Cross before, the same goes here.  Chrono Cross does not have a cereal based on it.  Chex Quest IS a cereal.  So Chex Quest wins.

Here's a topic for you.  If Chrono Cross DID have a cereal, what would it be like?  I think it would have two bags in it, like how Nintendo Cereal System and Nerds Cereal did.  Each cereal in the box would be like either versions of the world, like in Chrono Cross.  One cereal would be super nutritious and give you super strength when you ate it, and the other would have so much sugar in it you'd gain ten pounds every bite!

Hey Julian, I know you like Final Fantasy, so I'd like to encourage you to read my latest blog when you get a chance!  And don't forget to listen to my podcast, too!  --Cary

Well if you want to try out Chocobo GP, there is a free version you can download on the Switch called Chocobo GP Lite.  Again, it's that cell phone mentality I had a problem with in the game that I mentioned in my review.  And it's not the best game in the world, but you can at least try it for free that way.  If you do try it, let me know what you think.
