Indie PC Gaming for the Console Connoisseur

Indie gaming on the PC is easier than you might think. Here's an introduction to getting started, and some games you might enjoy.

People are always saying to me that they can’t game on their PC because it’s not powerful enough, or it doesn’t have this, or it doesn’t have that. Well, I’m here to tell you that might not be true.  While playing AAA games and other major releases may require hardcore gaming rigs, there are a lot of lower budget indie games available that are cheap and easily playable on the most basic of systems.

It’s indisputable that the indie gaming scene is more vibrant on PC than anywhere else, a result of a readily available platform and an infrastructure that makes it easy to develop and distribute games.

Steam

Whether it’s little games on Desura, browser, and flash-based games; or bigger indie releases on Steam, there’s really something for everybody.  And the best thing is, you don’t need new equipment to play these games – because you already have it.

I wish there was a site that listed all the new indie game releases. Metacritic doesn't list them even if they are on XBLI. I usually find out about them word of mouth like I did for Penny Arcade Adventures IV and the other Zeboyd games.

huh, somewhat helpful, i've only just got into pc gaming so every little helps, trying to get minecraft to run on my laptop, just configuring the graphics to make it run smoother.

Anyway I've found out how to make an external GPU for around a £100 i just need to figure out whether to give it it's own power supply.

P.S. Now that i'm done with Xenoblade i'm of the the Ys games Laughing

have you gotten the external GPU running yet?  I've looked at those, but didn't really experiment with it. My laptop has a video card but not a great one.  IT will play games but it's better off with indies.

I forgot that the Ys games are on Steam now.  Those are great choices.

Haven't bought it yet, need a well paying Job Tongue Out

There's some i can build or a buy the  MSI Radeon HD 5670 but it only the GPU not the case or card that connects to the Laptop, so i'll have to make one one.

how do you connect that? USB?

I have a Nvidia 525M in my laptop.  Pretty much the bare minimum for games.  The laptop cost $500 two years ago, and has treated me well. I can play older games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age and stuff, and some newer ones like Sleeping Dogs.  FFXIV doesn't work too well though.

I didn't have much luck running minecraft when I tried it though.  It was really laggy and I had a ton of problems.

Very good article Man.

It's very truth, as LIMBO runs better in my PC than Team Fortress 2. Then again i'm also planning to improve my computer. Also, thanks for the recommendations.

yeah it takes a lot to run these new 3D games, but there's lots of smaller games to play.  It's kind of insane how many there are.

I didn't know about Desura. Steam really does have some great stuff on there and I don't mind the DRM so much because it's optional. I have been meaning to buy Fez for awhile now but keep on forgetting about it. Thanks for the reminder!

I think you would like some of the games on Desura. A lot of retro stuff.  I haven't bought Fez either.  But I will during the Steam sale!

I hate lists like these because they remind me of how much of a life I don't have. I'm like oh sweet, new games to play - nope, I've played them all. Motherfucker.

ha, sorry, maybe next time.  It was hard choosing this list, and I wanted it to be for people who have never really gamed on their PC before.  Next time I'll find some that you haven't heard of.  Laughing

Yeah. I'm really looking for a good rpg to sink my teeth into... but oh well. Have you played rogue legacy? That's a really cool indie game that will run on anything.

there's always a million old RPG's on GOG.... Have you ever played Planescape: Torment?

I haven't played Rogue Legacy, but I've heard of it.  I almost downloaded it.

I did a video of it if you want to check out how it plays. It's a metroidvania-esque 2d platforming rogue like that has taken more hours of my life than I care to admit. And oh yeah, I love me some Planescape. The only crpg of that era that I haven't played is Arcanum. Oh, and Icewind Dale 1. I've played 2 though.

Congrats on your first feature, Matt! I remember you mentioning some of these titles in various blogs. I do like PC gaming, but I try not to clutter up my laptop with games, I need the space for my photos. And I actually started out as a PC gamer and played a ton of shareware games, which seem a little like the indie games of today.

thanks, Tami!  I understand not wanting to clutter your laptop, mine is so full of games I barely have space for anything else.  But I love my digital library of old and new PC games!

Shareware.  Whatever happened to it?

Congrats on the first feature man, and good job!

I've never been much of a PC gamer because my laptop sucks (No seriously, it's awful.. Like, 8 years awful, lol), and I'm really just a huge fan of console games for some reason. Although I can still kick back on a couch with a laptop and a controller, I still fancy the console.

i go half and half, half console and half PC.  But my real home is handhelds.  I love playing on handhelds.

Humble Bundle and IndieRoyale are the bane of my existence.  I cannot seem to say no to them...  Now I have hundreds of indie games that I have never played.

Loved playing FTL and the Binding of Isaac.

yeah I just bought "Sir, You are Being Hunted".  Too many games!

Congrats on your feature.

Nice list. I really wanna play To the Moon! It looks so cool, and I'm a sucker to anything with a good story. A friend of mine pointed me to FTL. It looks really cool as well and the open-endedness intrigues me. I'm not very into point and click games, but Deponia might pique my intrest. I'll pick it up if it's on sale.

Gah, I can't wait for the Steam summer sale to start!

thanks!

I've heard rumors it's going to start tomorrow but who knows?  it's going to start sometime though!

Thanks for this article.  As an old school gamer, I've been missing the simple charm of games past and indie gaming seems to have been filling a need for me quite a bit lately.  I've been enjoying the hell out of cave story during my lunch break at work.  For some reason I often neglect to search out what is new though and this was a great reminder.

hey, you're welcome!  Glad you liked it. Yeah, I feel the same way, a lot of indie have that old school feel that AAA's don't, and a great place to find them is on the PC.  Keep an eye out on the Steam sale this week and see what you can find!
