Also, what does the future hold for the 3DS portable Virtual Console?
The Virtual Console we all know and love hit the scene a little over four years ago, and since its inception has paved the way for release of 379 titles in North America. Over the past year, however, only 28 titles were published on the service spanning the 10 systems it represents. Compare this to its first full year and you’ll see a striking difference. In the calendar year of 2007, 157 titles of the available 379 were released. If anything is clear, it’s that the Virtual Console has been a bit of disappointment over the past couple of years, providing a small helping of games, with only a few gems littered in. But what does this mean in the grand scheme of the service itself?
A fantastic game soiled by bad framerate and shoddy controls.
By now, I think everyone knows what Angry Birds is – since its release on the iOS in December 2009, it has swept the market. The object of the game is quite simple; slingshot a variety of birds with differing abilities at pieced together structures on the other side of a map in an attempt to destroy various pigs. Simplicity is what makes the game so attractive and easy to pick up on a whim. While Angry Birds is a well-done game, the PlayStation Minis port of the title is lackluster due to a jumpy frame rate and subpar controls.
The guitar/band music genre has seen better days. Update: No new GH DLC beyond February.
Earlier this week, Harmonix reported they was undergoing layoffs of 12-15% of their approximately 240-person staff in order to restructure themselves to fit current projects underway. The move follows the sale of Harmonix to Columbus Nova, but there was no word of whether the layoffs were influenced by the music-gaming studio's new owners.
Don't buy this game.
Purchased from the Android Market for the going rate of 600 Yen (~$7.30), Square Enix's Crystal Defenders seems like it could be a premium app, set to appeal to those who desire a higher quality Android game. Fret not! This port of an iPhone title (...or was it an XBLA title? A WiiWare title? A PSN title? An earlier cell phone's title?) is certainly not a top-tier Android release. In fact, of the handful of gaming apps I've played, it's at the very bottom of the barrel!

The WiiWare demos continue this week, DSiWare sees four new titles, and the Virtual Console gets a single NES game.
Seemingly "getting the memo" from fans, Nintendo has continued to provide WiiWare demos in this week's Nintendo Download. Players can sample both Lit from Wayforward Technologies and Urbanix from Nordcurrent.
