Reliving the Glory Days?

Without Sega's competing BLAST PROCESSING, it's just not the same.

If you were paying attention yesterday during Nintendo’s "Nintendo Direct" address, you might’ve noticed a common theme undercutting the entire broadcast. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest properties put on display: Yoshi’s Island 3, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, The Legend of Zelda (A Link to the Past 2), Earthbound, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which saw a change in visuals/perspective that makes it even closer in style to its spiritual predecessor, Super Mario RPG . Maybe it’s just me, but this line-up is conjuring up some strong memories of the SNES.

HarmoKnight Hands On Preview

When Gamefreak takes a break from Pokémon, we all benefit.

Even though they seldom get the chance to prove it, Gamefreak—famous for making the mainline Pokémon games— can also innovate in genres quite different from their meat and potatoes product.  So, when it was announced that they would be creating a downloadable rhythm game for the 3DS, there was good reason to get excited.  Thanks to the recent release of a demo in the eShop, anyone who wasn’t already psyched up for HarmoKnight can find out why the rest of us are counting the days until its release on March 28th.

3 Things Uncharted Can Learn From Tomb Raider

Anything Drake can do Lara can do better!

When it was announced that Tomb Raider was getting the reboot treatment a few years ago, plenty of people – yours truly included – made it clear that Lara should pay close attention to that other tomb raiding franchise headlined by Nolan North – errr - Nathan Drake.  The point is many people looked at Uncharted as Tomb Raider for the current generation.  The guys at Crystal Dynamics had their work cut out for them if they didn’t want to be square in the middle of Naughty Dogs giant shadow.

Allusions Rising: Gearing Toward Greatness

War transforms us, Snake. Into beasts.

A certain inability to walk into a normal life pervades the player’s thirst for playful violence after taking down the Patriots in the Metal Gear series. The Winds of Destruction will have to fill that void. Some, like Sundowner, claim we surround the Self with violence, because of the feeling instilled when you kill your enemies and liberate the less fortunate and able. Others maintain that we argue philosophy as a way of waking up the beast inside of the Self. Regardless of the means, these musings have persisted through the Metal Gear franchise from the beginning. With Metal Gear Rising, they mesh high and low culture together in allusions that complicate our reason for loving to play.

God of War: Ascension Hands On Preview

Will Kratos' latest tale grow stale?

Upon learning about the direction of God of War: Ascension, I was hesitant to fully back this game. Instead of re-inventing the series, or continuing from the somewhat ambiguous ending of the third installment, Ascension was to be yet another prequel that would tell I was already familiar with. While the plot of the game still screams “useless filler” to me, my time with the game reminded me why God of War was so good to begin with. The absurdly high production values, a simple and stylish combat system, and larger than life set pieces in this thirty minute demo roused my interest in the series once again.
