Mailbag Has Been Revived

Zombie mailbag wants your brains. (In a good way.)

Avid fans of PixlBit (Read: Zap) may have noticed I've mentioned the idea of a solo podcast a few times in the past month. While at first, the idea was uncertain, as time passes, it seems to be more and more of a sure thing. How does Mailbag relate? I want to read and respond to listener mail! That's right. I want listener mail! I know the podcast hasn't yet begun, but it will soon, so why not get a head-start? You could be featured. You could be featured in the first edition of "JasonCast" or "PixlJalk," or whatever we decide to name the thing. How about, for the first episode, you send in suggestions for the title of the show? As always, suggestions can go to mailbag AT pixlbit DOT com, but in this case, they can also be sent to jasonr AT pixlbit DOT com, too.

Tour de 64: Big Mountain 2000

Attach "2000" to any title and it sounds cool.

Big Mountain 2000 is a skiing and snowboarding game released, quite fittingly, in the year 2000. It features characters who try too hard to act cool racing down hills that try too hard to be mountains.

Tough Non-Slip Dance Platform Review

The latest and greatest in dance pads is "Tough" indeed.

It’s been a while since I’ve pulled out the old Konami dance pad and played some DDR on the original Xbox. The long sessions and practice I put into the game in college got me pretty good at the game, and before long I was an expert DDR player. Performing the songs at that level really put a beating on the pre-packaged pad, and it slowly started to wear and lose accuracy as time went on. Hyperkin recently released a more durable version of the classic peripheral, which they have named the Tough Pad, and it certainly lives up to the name.

Tour de 64: Beetle Adventure Racing!

As eccentric as one would expect from a game starring Volkswagen's cute little car.

"Adventure Racing" is a bit of a misnomer, as the game has much more to do with racing than it does adventure. There is no shortage of Beetles however, as it's the only car available. Accept it.

Green Day: Rock Band Review

The Beatles were the first to receive their own game, now Green Day gets their time in the sun.

Now that music games have reached mass market appeal, both Harmonix and Activision have shifted focus to producing band-specific titles that encompass that artist's full career. The Beatles Rock Band was the first to truly nail the essence of a band and Green Day Rock Band is Harmonix's second attempt at doing just that. At a glance, the title does a pretty good job capturing their career in terms of song selections, but it does leave something to be desired in its presentation.

Tour de 64: Battlezone: Rise of the Black Dogs

And the fall of the white dogs...?

This is one of the last games I added to my collection. It was a poor seller and is consequently somewhat rare, though most collectors seem to be indifferent towards it. One weird thing about this game is that I once purchased a used copy of WCW Mayhem from a GameStop which happened to contain this game instead, and I can't help but wonder if some bored employee swapped out the chips from the games.

Tour de 64: BattleTanx: Global Assault

Urge to destroy... rising...

In a surprising turn of events from a company who loves to rehash content, BattleTanx: Global Assault is a rather significant improvement over the first game. It's still very much a guy game, but hey, tanks are always a winning formula. You like tanks too. Don't deny it.

Tour de 64: BattleTanx

Tanx a lot, 3DO.

Now this is a guy game if I ever saw one. Tanks? Check. Explosions? By the truckload. Post-apocalyptic setting? And how. Crudely-spelled title? Of course. Rescue the chick? That's even a multiplayer mode.

Tour de 64: Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker

The joke was on me!

This is a fighting game based on the Batman Beyond spin-off, which I had never heard of before. As Batman, you punch and kick your way through mostly side-scrolling levels and must stop the Joker from carrying out some nefarious scheme. There are four different suits to choose from which each have strengths and weaknesses, such as the offensive suit which has good attacks but a weak block. There are cutscenes in between levels which tell the story, which consist of stills and text.

Tour de 64: Bassmasters 2000

The master of bass is the caster of class.

Oy, another fishing game. Do I have to play this one? Yeah yeah, I'm on a mission and all of that. Should've made a list of exceptions before I started... oh well, I guess it is too late now.
