Celebrating Five Years of PixlBit

I once wrote a review of Little Big Planet after seeing a single screenshot and reading like three sentences of a larger preview. I totally would have won if I'd entered it. :P

Celebrating Five Years of PixlBit

Pretty much my experience too. Turned out that Pixlbit was pretty rad, so it worked out for the best. :D

I think the coolest thing about the place is that after being gone for a year or so due to various things and whatnot, I come back and the place is still the same. Same great staff, same great community--along with some new faces--and it's just as welcoming as it ever was. I'd like to say that I never doubted it, but I did. This is one of the rare times I'm glad to have been wrong.

Retro ranting: Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles

I have a copy of this game, and I dig it much, I do. Very fun. :)

I am taking a break.

I'm not sure that I understand how suggesting something so obvious amounts to being a dick, Larry. In fact, out of all the folks with whom I've discussed the possibility, you're the only one to have taken offense to it. I kinda feel like if that reflects poorly on anyone here, it aint me.

What does reflect poorly on me is the conclusion that I came to after putting a few days between myself and this debacle, which is that while I may have sincerely set out to help you, I feel like the the message was probably muddled by the tone of my criticism of your ability to handle other people's opinions, which was in direct response to the gigantic dump that you took on the entire Pixlbit community in your farewell post. I should have been better than that, and I wasn't, and for that much I apologize.

I am taking a break.

You made it about me and every other member of the site when you chose to stupidly categorize the entire Pixlbit communtiy as being a "mass collective" and mindless followers of brands just because a couple of people disagreed with you at some point in the past. It was a petty, arrogant thing to do, and it's why I chose to comment.

What's so fucked up is that in spite of how much of a dick you came across as being for generalizing the entire community in such an insulting way, I was sincerely just trying to help you out. When other folks might have told you to fuck yourself, I tried to give you some helpful advice instead, and I even went out of my way to frame it as inoffensively as possible out of consideration for you. Yet here we are. You'd think that I called you a self-absorbed, socially-maladjusted man-child for the way you've chosen to react.

As for why I bothered, it's partly because against all odds I actually felt a little bad for you, but it's mostly because there are folks here who consider you a friend who want you to stick around. I just figured that if I could help you out, maybe you'd get over this shit and stick around, if not for your sake, then for theirs. Yeah, as it turns out, i'm not actually a dick after all. Go figure.

Anyway, I'm sincerely sorry that I bothered, Larry. If you wanna give yourself an ulcer over inconsequential shit that's clearly not intended for you, then go right ahead.

I am taking a break.

No, I don't think that you're old and out of touch. I was trying to get across to you that you appear to the cause of the majority of your problems, only I was trying to avoid being a prick about it out of consideration for you.

Look, Larry. You're the one who choses to fixate on fairly inconsequential things, and it's you who chooses to take it personally when you could just as easily ignore it. I feel like you could save yourself a lot of frustration by coming to terms with the fact that much of what you complain about was never meant for you in the first place.
For example, you're not the target market for the virtual console service, but why complain about its existence when there are folks out there to whom it is legitimately appealing? Not everything is meant for you, and not everything that doesn't appeal to you is inherently worthless. And for that matter, the folks to whom it does appeal aren't necessarily sheep. So why not just ignore it and save yourself the frustration? That's all that I was getting at, man.

Anyway, enjoy your break. Hope you come back somewhere down the line, and with a renewed enthusiasm. Like some folks have already said, there's a lot of interest in retro stuff, so you could always stick to covering that if all else fails.

The thing that sucks about Goodwill in my neck of the woods is that it's within a stone's throw of the local retro game store. So instead of dropping their old gaming stuff off at Goodwill, people take it in to the retro joint, and I end up spending $20 on a copy of Megaman 5. :P

You're right! I'll be 21 this next May!

As far as anyone knows! :D

I am taking a break.

If it appears that the industry is moving in a direction that you're not comfortable with, it's worth considering that it just might seem that way because you are no longer part of its target audience. I'm not saying that it's all wine and roses. There's a lot to complain about. It's just that I've read your blogs, and you seem to complain an awful lot about things that you should know are clearly not meant for you, which have no bearing on you or your gaming habits whatsoever, and which could be dealt with by simply chosing to ignore them. Just kinda seems to me like you're causing yourself a whole lot of unnecessary stress is all.

Anyway, it's pretty clear that you're taking all of this a bit too seriously, so for your own sake, I think you're making the right choice. While you're gone, you could maybe work on handling other people's opinions better, because while you may well regain an interest in the hobby somewhere down the line, you're never going to live in a world where everyone's gonna agree with you all of the time. And let's be real here, that's what's really bothering you, aint it? Your characterization of the community as a "mass collective" kinda makes that obvious.

So yeah, I hope that your time away is positive whatever you end up doing.
