Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage

Posted on 04/20/2010 at 05:35 PM | Filed Under Feature

Ah, then we disagree. I like the feature because I get to read about all the N64 games I didn't play. Why would I care about Kathrine's impressions of Banjo-Kazooie? I like the game, I know how it plays. I don't need validation for enjoying it, and, no offense, Kathrine, I really don't care if she doesn't like it, either. I want to read about all the other games... Like Aidyn Chronicles, that I never spent time on. I don't care if they're particularly notable games or not, I want to read about the ones I didn't play. I want to read about the games I've never heard of, or heard of once and passed over. That's a major part of what I think is so special about the feature.

Well, thanks to you, Chessa, I think I'll pick this up pretty soon.

Part of the point I've perceived from Kathrine's column is that it's indiscriminate. Each game is played, and by going in alphabetical order, there isn't a weighted preference to them. The point is to experience everything that came out on the N64, good, bad, crazy, and everything in-between. Personally, I think going in alphabetical order demonstrates that idea pretty effectively, and I don't see any reason to stuff the front end of the column with the best games, leaving little of the good games left for later parts.

Ubisoft Eliminates Paper Manuals For PS3 and Xbox 360 Games

Posted on 04/19/2010 at 09:52 PM | Filed Under News

Yeah, I'm not so sure I like this idea. How many of us, when we were kids, remember going home from wherever we bought the game, and reading the manual on the way home? Sure, gaming has grown up a bit since then, but really, it's a childhood experience that's in the process of going away.

Unfortunately, this also probably means more and longer slow tutorials built into games, often without an option to skip. As a short-term business move, this saves Ubisoft a bit of change in the production process, but the long-term repercussions might not be worth it. I can say that unless Ubisoft and the publishers that follow suit tread carefully on their manual-like methods, I probably won't be satisfied with their digital alternatives, unless they aren't forced on me, as a gamer, in any way.

New Naughty Bear Videos

I just wish the bears looked cuter, more innocent. It would make everything feel a little more surreal. When every bear has a grumpy face, it doesn't seem as playfully devastating, IMO.

Major League Gaming Season Opens Today

Despite being based in Florida, no one from PixlBit can make it to the event. Still, especially if our readers have an interest in the MLG, expect to see a bit more coverage of it from us. In the future, we do hope to provide on-the-floor coverage of a few select MLG events, particularly ones like this, that are more-or-less local to us.

That all said, it's too bad they can't broadcast the Brawl stream. I've never gotten into Halo 3, and find Tekken hard to enjoy watching, so Brawl is the one I'd like to see most. Still, I've seen a few youtube videos of high-level Brawl players, and unfortunately, the game isn't as exciting to watch as Melee was before it.

Skate 3 Demo Now Available

Take a look at the first sentence of the second paragraph of the press release we posted...

I think some of the words from the first half of the sentence somehow got mixed into the second half, but I can't be sure.

Regardless, I like the idea of a contest based on the demo. It definitely sounds like a great way to build up hype on the game.

You do have a type.

Also, I had no idea volleyball was in this game. Did Tecmo even bother to market that this time around?

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Review

Posted on 04/11/2010 at 04:46 PM | Filed Under Review

I typically love RPGs with timed attacks, timed dodges, and all that sort of thing. Super Mario RPG was one of my first that does it, and I've always believed it was one of the best. When it first came out on the virtual console, I started a level 3 quest, to play it over again, but I quickly found the biggest annoyance wasn't actually in winning the fight, but losing the "Yoshi Egg" game after, so you'd not gain any experience points.
