Hackers Create Level Editor for New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Posted on 11/19/2009 at 05:24 PM | Filed Under News

Relax, vudu. That video was produced one day after the game was leaked, more as a proof of concept. At that point, the game literally wouldn't work on the Wii. It was recorded using an emulator, hence the slow speed, and the person creating it didn't worry about fixing his mistakes, like the very first mushroom block.

All it did was show it could be done, and that they were working on it. The video above it was done with the released program, which just doesn't seem so good at this point, but is available. Still, it, too, is more or less proof it works, rather than an actual attempt at creating something enjoyable.

The people who made the editor used for the second video based the design off an editor created for the DS version... The difference is, the Wii version can easily be used!

After Reggie is released, I'm probably going to download it and create a few stages of my own, meant for multiplayer purposes, where some players will take a high path, and others will take a low one, and the paths will interact somehow, just to see how it works. Also, I'll be picking up remakes of classic Mario games for the multiplayer, too.

It's a good thing.

Halo: Reach to Be Shown at VGA Awards

I think it's hilarious when we play into marketing so much like this: People are tuning into the show to watch an advertisement! That's incredible, and it's happening more and more with movie and video game trailers! It's crazy.

So much so, that unless I really want to watch the program "advertising" it's advertisements in this way, I tune out, though really, without a Nielson rating device thing, it doesn't matter, but I like to imagine I can still send a message, regardless.

Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition Detailed

Honestly, with no major announcement based on date at this point, it's tough to say when the controller will be released.

The one thing I don't understand, though, is why the staggered DLC? I'd honestly imagine in most cases, having all the DLC available at one individual point in time makes more sense than staggering it, so buyers don't forget about or ignore later offerings. That's an uneducated opinion, though.

Square Enix Europe Announces Kane & Lynch 2

It's so weird to see an announcement like this with a Square-Enix name tag on it.

Hopefully nothing fishy happens with review scores on this one!

Lufia II Re-Imagined on the DS

My roommate was a Lufia II fan, though I never played it. If it's multiplayer, we'll probably both pick it up and play through. If not, I can't say for certain.

No More Heroes Coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

I wonder how it'll sell here, and in comparison to the Wii sequel. That'll be interesting to see.

Sports Authority Stores Begin to Sell Wii Consoles

Posted on 11/17/2009 at 02:24 PM | Filed Under News

This is a great idea.

I tried to begin negotiating a deal between my family's mom & pop-ish pharmacy chain and Nintendo about Brain Age and the DS, but, naturally, I didn't have any information to contact Nintendo, and couldn't find any, and emails whatever I thought was relevant never got replied to, so I gave up.

I still think it was a good idea, though. Not all of Nintendo's products have to be sold everywhere. If you target relevant items to relevant stores, you can reach broader audiences, shown by having the space to set up Wii Fit plus in the Sports Authority. Definitely a good move for everyone involved.

Nick and Luke Ramble About Third Parties and Gaming at Large

Posted on 11/17/2009 at 02:14 PM | Filed Under Feature

I guess I'll have to summarize:

Peter Molyneux: Big dreamer, doesn't flesh out ideas into games, and either won't listen to make 'em complete, or no one will tell him they aren't full experiences. Haven't played his stuff, my opinion's from what I read.

The thing about Rare: Before, Rare games felt unique and different. Once Star Fox Adventures game around, they felt less individual and cookie-cutter. Many other developers could do what they do now. Opinion based on what I've seen and read.

The most successful third parties come up with a concept, then fit the concept to the platform or platforms that match it best. Take a look at the big ones, and it's clear. More support: Southpeak, a new publisher, is just booming, and they've got individual games published on every console out there, yet few are multiplatform releases. No one had ever heard of Southpeak before this generation. Bad 3rd parties choose the platform before the concept, and it just doesn't work. This doesn't apply to first parties, since they create the concept for the console, and third parties don't seem to filter their ideas as well.

Natal looks silly. As in, it just doesn't seem tangible. I have the same reaction as I did to the PS3 announcement of motion controls in the "Dual-Shock" style controller. It didn't make sense. Additionally, Molyneux-related: Milo doesn't look interesting. Why would we care about whatever with this? And... well, they had a puppeteer behind him, running the scene. Will Milo actually be what was promised in the first place? That still goes back to Molyneux issues, though.

And last, but not least, the EyeToy pet game just seems "Meh." A simpler, better looking option truthfully is Nintendogs, I hate to say. You don't have the camera issues, and the pets are something more "real" that is more socially acceptable. It's kind of sad that a few-years-old DS game can outdo my impressions of a newer "high-tech" offering of virtually the same idea. Neat in concept, poor in execution, which is too bad.

I think I hit on everything I said previously, with the error in posting. Let's hope it goes through this time!

OH NO! I posted an awesome response to this, and now it's gone. :( I just realized there was an error when I went to post, and that made the post "gone."

Grr.

Update - Pandemic Studios Shutdown by EA

Posted on 11/17/2009 at 12:10 PM | Filed Under News

I hate to say it, but I think EA has spent the last few years expanding too rapidly and recruiting too much talent, specifically new talent, for their own good. I don't think they've got enough focus on original IP that sets itself apart from anything else in the market, and I think video gamers and consumers have figured this out, for the most part.

Hence, now, we have EA studios closing and massive lay-offs. Still, from the glancing I did, I thought Pandemic was at least moderately successful, so I'm surprised to see this happen to them. Perhaps they've been less productive in the last year or two than expected?
