Monday Night PlayBit: New Super Mopper Mario Bros. Wii

Posted on 08/14/2011 at 03:45 PM | Filed Under Feature

Hooray! This was the best PlayBit yet! But no really, very entertaining, some of the antics between you two are priceless. Here are just some of my favourite moments from it:

Video 1, World 2-3: It's fun to watch you guys try to climb this stage. Try using teamwork next time! This one has some of the best quotes from the night, such as:

"You're small, and I am... a much better person."

"I didn't know I could run through them, I ran through the donut."

"Donuts have holes!"

Video 1, World 3-5: Nice try bouncing on the cannons together. Needs a lot of coordination on that one.

Video 3, World 3-Castle: Why did someone want Chris to hold a bomb until it exploded? Did they think it'd fit his self-destructive play style? We certainly saw that in this stage, given all the P-switches that were hit... Lots of explosion action in this stage, I hope that you enjoyed all the bombs!

Video 3, World 4-4: I hoped you liked the surprise in the pipe. To make it better, you both were then killed by Goombas when you tried the stage again, which was funny because Jason is always badgering Chris about getting hit by Goombas!

Video 3 and 4, World 4-Castle: Some more fun antics as you both attempt what appeared to be the most challenging stage for the two of you. Watch out for that trap at the end!

Video 4, World 5-2: Wall kicks are hard to coordinate...

Slide Pad Love: Why It’s a Big Deal

Posted on 03/19/2011 at 02:03 AM | Filed Under Feature

"Analog control on the 360 is far better than the Wii’s because its analog stick base is not octagonal."

Interestingly, I find this to be the exact opposite. With a circular base, I can't tell simply by pressing the stick which direction is up, because there is no shape to give me feedback. As such, in any game that uses the stick for character movement, I can never walk straight forward using a circular stick. Nintendo's analogue stick design makes it far easier to press one of the eight directions, and I find that rarely is any direction in between actually used or needed. When would I ever need to hold the stick 1/5th the way to the left?

Also, Super Mario 64 DS's "touchscreen analogue stick" was meant for the thumb pad which came with the original DS model but not the Lite or DSi. Unless you had one, the touchscreen option was worthless.

Mario Sports Mix Review

I didn't expect this game to turn into much, mostly because I also feel Mario Hoops on DS was not a good game, so this review lines up with my impression of everything I've seen and read about the game. Good thing I had the good sense to not pre-order this one despite the $10 Amazon credit for doing so.

I don't mind it in some games if these two conditions are met: the shake is sensitive enough that a quick flick works, and the action isn't something used terribly often (the jump in de Blob was a no-no). Super Mario Galaxy works fine, I have no trouble getting it to work with slight shakes and it isn't used all that often in most levels. Donkey Kong Country Returns, on the other hand, is just a mess. I like the shake the Nunchuk to reload weapon in Call of Duty, though it could stand to be a bit more sensitive. It's fun to shoot someone down and then do a victory fist pump which also happens to reload my weapon.

I'm okay with motions taking over for buttons for now, but once motion controls can get more accurate, I want to see them become something more. They need to be a more accurate representation of the actual action you're performing instead of just a wild shake.

Banned, For That!?

I haven't seen the movie, but I have heard quotes such as that, and I have to say the movie sounds absolutely terrible. It's clearly all shock value, one of the lowest forms of "comedy," you'd have to be stoned or braindead to think that's funny.

It doesn't mean the guy should be banned for using a quote as his tagline, though, especially if it's been there for four years with no action taken. But considering that you can be banned simply by stating in your profile that you're gay, I can't say I'm surprised.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light Review

There's a fine line between classic and poor design... and it sounds as if this game crosses it. Not being able to select which enemy to attack? I haven't seen that awful idea since Dragon Warrior II on the NES. All that does is remove a simple element of strategy and artificially increase difficulty, adding yet another element of luck.

That was a pretty crazy natural event, it's good to hear that relatively little life was lost. It's caused a lot of damages though, so hopefully those who no longer have suitable living conditions can get the aid they need.

That Kirby game is basically Nintendo's Duke Nukem Forever.
