The Wolf Among Us - Episode 2: Smoke and Mirrors Review

Posted on 03/10/2014 at 01:10 PM | Filed Under Review

I'm looking forward to starting this game.  I've paid for the season pass and have downloaded the first two episodes.  Just can't decide if I want to start it soon or wait until they are all available.

I don't really know much about this game, so I'm curious about this line from the review: "Telltale’s games pride themselves on their tough choices, and while there were plenty of decisions to make, I didn’t get a huge sense that the options I chose in episode one had a huge effect on the outcome of the story so far."

Did they sell this game as another one where your choices were important?  I've played the majority of telltale games, and I thought Walking Dead was really the only one so far where choices mattered.  Most of the previous games were just straight-forward adventure games.  I hope this doesn't sound like I'm being critical, because I am honestly just wondering since I have not read much about the game.

Just finished Remember Me

I finished it this past weekend too, and my opinion didn't really change from the begining either.  It's not a bad game, it just has alot of weak spots.  There are several great ideas, and the world itself is very interesting, but the gameplay is somewhat lacking in both execution and polish.  Still, not a bad game for the price I paid (nothing).

I don't think the term metroidvania is meant to mean that everything about the games has to be the the same, like how items are equipped.   Most games in any given genre have alot of differences with each other.

I thought the key to something being a 'metroidvania' was basically that the environment is designed to be one big interconnected area, but there are pathways that are closed off at the beginning.  Later, once you acquire key items, weapons, or upgrades, you must can go back to previously explored areas and open up the blocked pathways.

Oh, I wouldn't bother with a sequel either If it was more of the same.  Although I don't think it's bad, I don't really care about the story either. I just think the game has a lot of potential. The world is really cool, and if they opened it up more it would be awesome. I like the memory sequences and wish they had more of that. I also like how it sometimes does different stuff with puzzles than the typical action game, like the rememberances and later in the game the way the do the locking-unlocking thing with doors.  I was also interested in how they took the combo type fighting popularized by Batman and did something different with it (how each move does something different), but they need to refine it, as we discussed below.

I think the game had a lot of good ideas, it was just sort of lacking in execution.  I would hope a sequel would be a lot better, but like you said, the sales woulnt likely justify it. Heck, I didn't buy it and am glad I didn't. (got it off of ps+).

One thing that really bugs me about the game is that you can't continue a combo from one enemy to another (unless I'm just doing something wrong).  It can get really annoying when you're fighting 5 people that are crowded together and you've done 6 out of a 7-hit combo and someone else gets in your way.  Or even worse, the guy drops dead before you finish the combo and it instantly starts over when you hit the next person.

I'm currenlty playing it too and have very similar feelings about it as you do.  It's good, but not great.  When I first started playing it it seemed like it was going to be something special and I couldn't understand the mediocore reviews.  It didn't take long to see why though.  You're right about not being able to go anywhere it doesn't want you to go.  You basically just have to run around and look for the orange highlighting whatever it wants you to jump to, which might be next to a half dozen of the exact same thing that you can't jump to.

Still, I wish they would make a sequel.  It's a fun game, just kind of repetitive.  The sequences where you change someone's memory is really neat and I wish they expanded on that and did more of it.  And they did do some other things right.  This is one of the very few games where they show people (and robots) moving around and doing things through windows in houses/stores.  I really like touches like that.

Supposedly you can download an iOS app for the playstation network and claim your games that way too, but I haven't had success.  I've downloaded the app, but I've encountered an error message every time I've ever tried to log in.

I already have Dead Nation (for the PS3 at least), Thomas Was Alone, and Lone Survivor.  They are all fun games.  I've wanted to play Tomb Raider, and now I'm glad I held off on buying it.

There are also some good sales going on right now too.  I've been meaning to get Ni No Kuni for awhile not, and just snagged it a couple days ago on the PSN.  I think it was either $6 or $7 dollars

If you log on to the playstation network through the webpage, you can claim the playstation 4 games.  I was scared that they'd take the free PS4 games off before I got one, so I did a google search and found someone giving the info about the playstation network.  It worked for me.  I've been able to claim the last couple months of free PS4 games doing it this way.  The only issue for me is that the webpage is kind of annoying, but that's probably more my fault than anything.  Both times I've logged on I had to click around on a bunch of links and went in a couple loops until I finally found the page that allowed me to claim the games.

Is Nintendo really that BaD? Pondering the fate of the Wii U on a snow/icey day.

I don't regret getting a WiiU, but I have to admit that it spends much of it's time just sitting around gathering dust.

I really do like the off-tv play feature.  I don't mind so much not having cross play with the 3DS (I think dual-screen works well on a handheld, but splitting it up between a one screen in your hand and one on the tv might not work so well), but I really want cross-play/buy with the virtual console games.  I recently spent over $100 on virtual console games on the 3DS.  I really wish I could play them on a bigger screen every now and then, but there's no way I'm going to buy them again.  On the other hand, I bought all the Mega Man games on the WiiU, and sometimes I wish I could play them on a portable, but again there's no way I'm buying the exact same game again.  I think if they allowed this it would be a great selling point for both systems.  Being able to play PS1 games that I had already bought on the PS3 network was one of the reasons that I first bought a vita.
