Greenman's Top 13 of 2013

It's pretty hard to like The Last of Us as much as I did. Legends is so fucking great. I thought Origins was really good, but certainly not the best 2D platformer this gen. Legends is the best 2D platformer since Sonic was on the Genesis.

Rayman Legends is one of my top 3 platformers, after Super Mario World and Sonic 2. And those games are as sacred as video games can be for me, so it's pretty fucking great.

Why Modern FPS Are Terrible

I don't really think it's fair to say fuck Halo for inventing those two things. Do they suck in most the games that copy them? Absolutely. Do they suck in Halo? Hell no! There's so much stuff happening in the battlefields that regenerating shields were the only way for you to keep up and even then, they design the areas so finding somewhere to recharge your shields is a challenge in and of itself.

As for the two weapon systems, the game litters weapons everywhere so it doesn't significantly reduce the options you have, just ensures that you can't use something like a rocket launcher or sniper rifle in areas where a rocket launcher or sniper rifle would be overpowered. Like regenerating health, I 100% agree with you on other games, but it works in Halo.

You can make the argument that it changed shit to hate on it, but why not hate Resident Evil 4 for making "survival horror" about action then? Because the people copying that game hurt their own games by following the crowd just like all the FPS developers copying Halo hurt their own. But it doesn't change that those two games were great because their mechanics made sense in their own game. That's why they're held in such high regard.

Anyways, I do agree completely on the no variety. The best shooters in my mind give a wealth of enemies for you to shoot which all feel different. It's half the reason I love Halo and Mass Effect's shooting so much.

Hawks's Snubbed Games of the Year - 2013

Really? I've actually seen more backlash against Gone Home than praise. I can't say myself where I stand because I haven't played it, but I'm not really the audience for that kind of game. I preferred The Stanley Parable's take on that kind of game. But here's a pretty in depth negative take on it if you really want to see some of them. Good list, but a lot different from mine

Mine was a lot less dramatic. My family's Catholic and pretty religious, but when I had to do all this shit to get confirmed, I just wondered why the fuck God cares about this. I had to do activities that had nothing to do with religion, sacrifice entire weekends for it, and other things. And that got me wondering about why I'm listening to a bunch of people rather than God himself. So I still believe in God, but think organized religion is not the way to do it. Just be a good person and make sure you made the world a better place, that's all I think he cares about.

Yeah, but what's the point of variety when a good chunk of it's shit? Not trying to talk down on it or anything, but what really brings GTA down is when you get into a pointless or boring mission that really has no reason to exist. Without that it would be much higher on my list, but a lot of the game is really not fun.

And it's not like SR4 was all taking out baddies. You had the races, you had taking out the mothership, you had flying missions. I liked SR4's weapons a lot too, GTA's felt better, but not enough to be more fun than say, the 'Merica weapon.

No such thing as owning too many copies of Mass Effect.

It's in my top 3 2D platformers. And number one and two are Super Mario World and Sonic 2, which will never ever change, so it's pretty fucking good.

I honestly think RE6 is basically if The Last of Us was written by Michael Bay.

See, I love the writing, but the gameplay just really clicked for me. And if it does, Naughty Dog does a fantastic job with pacing so it's easy to get sucked in.
