In Defense of Halo

Posted on 01/05/2014 at 03:36 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Halo was like the biggest game for me at the begining of this century. I didn't ever get into multiplayer, but I loved co-op play. For the me the series only got better until the crowning achievement of Reach. Halo 4 has some changes that bothered me and made it a little less fun, but I still follow the series in all its forms: games, books, comics, and I guess a TV show coming soon from Spielberg.

I don't get the bashing. I'm not particularly interested in COD (the modern warfare ones) or Battlefield games, but I don't have anything bad to say about them. They're good for what they are. I may even try them someday. But I'm a Halo guy. I like my scifi and my amped up super soldiers and Halo does that better than anyone.

Yea, Destiny seems to have some of that magic. I was excited by the last gameplay video I saw. And Marty O'Donnel's music adds a lot. Didn't think it mattered much until I played Halo 4 and really missed his presence in the game.

Why Modern FPS Are Terrible

Posted on 01/04/2014 at 04:29 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Games, especially FPS's, are all moving towards more realism. You can only carry two weapons reasonable in real life, so lets put that in the game. Bad idea. Less fun. For some reason I noticed this especially in Duke Nukem Forever. I think because I was expecting the old school style of being able to choose from whichever weapon you picked up during the game. I screamed in anger over that one. Yes, and rage quit.

I think, despite the two weapon thing in Halo, the game has been very fun up until Halo 4 when it became more COD-like, meaning closer to a simulation of combat. I hate hunkering behind cover and reloading every five seconds. To heck with that! It's why I haven't played the COD: Modern Warefare series... or GRAW... or any modern combat game that wants to seem real.

The slow movement in Lost Planet recently drove me to rage quit. I know he's moving through snow, but do mechs have to be slow? No they frickin' don't!

The issue with same enemy types I think will be a thing of the past very soon as almost all games are online now with real players. Bioshock Infinite did seem a little old school in some of its design despite the fantastic visuals.

Overall I think it's the desire for realism that killing gameplay in a lot of games. Go watch TV if you want that. Games are for fun and fantasy.

So how 'bout that Bravely Default demo? - demo review

I may have to download it. I'm trying to get back in to Etrian Odyssey Untold but it's nice to see something new.

I have Kung-Fu Panda 'cause I liked the demo. Still need to play it though. There's something about a game you can finish in one weekend. I kinda like that.

R&C Nexus looks amazing and plays very well. Sometimes these 3D platformers have a bad camera but R&C does it right. I had no control issues with this game.

Random thoughts compiled into an update of sorts...

I heard about Cookie Clicker on the One of Swords podcast and there's this hilarious episode where Hugh is told about the game and then begins it during the episode and then can't stop. Dan tells him to stop but he can't and you keep hearing Hugh clicking throughout the show.

The game sounds hilarious, delivering the very essence of what makes a game addictive and little else. Get more Grandmas to make more cookies? Ha!

Retro Game of the Week: Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

I discovered this on Xbox Live a while back and fell in love with it. Later i picked up the GBA version and my friend got the PSone version. My favorite characters are the Darkstalkers ones and I tried the demo of the fighting game on XBL, but I'm just not a 1v1 fighting game fan. Tetris Attack style battles though. That's awesome!

The music in this HD Remix version is astounding! My favorite song is the one that runs over the end credits when you beat all the characters. I think this is it below but I'm in the library right now and I can't hear sound. WHY ISN'T THERE A SOUNDTRACK I CAN BUY OF THIS GAME!

Wrote every one of these down to add to my list. I'm glad there's so many of my favorite genre on iOS. Now I just need the device darn it.

On a related subject, I'm playing Skulls of the Shogun on XBLA and loving it. It's also available on iOS now.

The Cave is awesome. I keep wanting to play it more but I've done everything in it. It needs a sequel pronto.
