The Games of the Namcot Collection (Switch Import)

Pardon my ignorance, but both those pictures look pretty sketchy to me.  That top one with the very plain cartridge 'art' looks more like a preview version or a pre-release review copy of the game.  Did other Genesis games do that?  And if that bottom picture is from Japan, why does it say "SEGA Genesis" on it?  In Japan, the Genesis is called the Mega Drive.

2011 had a lot of great games, looking back on my GOTY list that year.  I loved Portal 2, and Okamiden was my GOTY.  Here's my article from that year:

Well it's a lot of games you can download.  The cartridge only comes with 12 Famicom games on it.

Yeah I imagine people in Japan have fond memories trading secrets about Druaga back then.  I miss those days, too, but in a way, I'm also glad we have all the info at our fingertips.  It was just so frustrating as a kid to get stuck on a game and then have to wait in hopes a magazine would have the answer.  It's one of the reasons why I didn't get into the NES as much as you might think.

What game did you buy?

Yeah you have to be careful about stuff you buy on the Internet.  I come across that all the time at work.  A customer will come in with a part they need a pipe fitting for, and nothing we have fits.  I ask them where they got it, and they say, "I dunno, off the internet."  And I ask them if it's from another country and they say, "Probably."  I then explain to them that the size and threading on their pipe is probably metric if it came from another country, and we only carry standard US measurements here.  Then they get mad at me for not having it.  I want to say to them, "What do you expect?  We live in the USA and don't use metric."  I guess that's what specialty hardware stores are for.

Oh yeah, I remember this one on the classic collections.  That first person perspective turned me off.

Check it out!

I got this and the Joker amiibo and there will be an article about them up at GamerDad at the end of the month.

Retro Review: Sim City (SNES)

Posted on 10/11/2020 at 07:49 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I remember when Sim City first came out on PC.  It was EVERYWHERE and I still remember the box art that looked like a weird steampunk Game Boy or whatever.  My friend had it on PC, and he'd bring in printouts of his city to show me, which I thought was pretty cool.

Later I rented it on the SNES to try it out for myself and I was surprised on how addicting it was.  Not enough to pay full price for, but I'm glad I got to try it.

MANY years later when the Wii first came out, one of the first Virtual Console games for it was Sim City!  I remembered how fun it was, and the price was reasonable enough so I downloaded it.  Plus I was curious how this whole Virtual Console thing worked.  I showed Sim City on Wii to my brother Jeff and he LOVED it.  After playing the SNES version on Wii, he immediate downloaded Sim City 3000 on his computer and he's been a fan of the series ever since.

PS: I like how Mr. Wright makes cameo appearances in Link's Awakening and Smash.  Also I think it's interesting how Will Wright came up for the idea for this game after having fun making cities in Raid on Bungeling Bay.

I imagine getting a Switch in the US right now is harder than importing a game from Japan.

I rented the A-Team movie and fell asleep during it.  But one of the actresses playing in it was very pretty, I thought.

I liked Epic Mickey and its sequel, but they weren't perfect.  I loved how they brought back Oswald, though.  One of my feathers in my game reviewing cap is getting to sit in a panel discussion with Warren Specter, the creator of the Epic Mickey games.

The main game I enjoyed in 2010 that got my GOTY was Wario Ware: D.I.Y. on the DS.  But I've bragged enough about how I won a game design contest for it, so I'll shut up about it now.
