Play DOS Games Online and GDC

Posted on 02/27/2017 at 09:09 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Holy crap!  This is a goldmine folks. If you don't know DOS, you've been missing out on access to some of the most groundbreaking games of all time, games the media won't talk about even though modern games are still trying to do what some of these games did.

Is the Cartridge a BaD move for physical Media?

Gaming's Greatest Remakes #8: Duck Tales Remastered

Still never played the original. Would probably play it first instead of jumping to the remake like some people would, just because NES game is more visually cohesive. Those 3D backgrounds are terrible and clash. Would still play it though just to see what was added/changed.

It's just dawned on me that I can't think of many PC game remakes. A couple of the Ultima games have been remade, and X-Com was given a reboot but not a remake. But I can't think of anything else.

BaD 2017.8: video game acumen.

I never had a problem with this stuff in the older Hitman games. Now in this new one they pretty much write on your eyeballs what is going on at each moment and people still can't get it?  I actually don't think this game is better at communicating information. More obvious, but not better. And that goes for most AAA games these days. Icons all over the screen, compromising immersion. Inelegant solution to problems that were already solved or didn't exist. I never heard anyone having a problem knowing if NPCs were suspicious. You had a suspicion meter and body language to go by, and that was it. Was pretty obvious even then. I turned all that shit in the new Hitman off. This game is a great return to form after the donkey dick that was Absolution and shouldn't be marred by all this clumsy hand holding fuckwittery.

BaD, Bloody Tears

Bloody Tears is one of the classic video game songs. As a whole, I think the series stands at the top of the heap of video game music.

Gaming's Greatest Remakes #4: Metroid Zero Mission

Yes, I'd say ZM is one of the best remakes there has been. It's different enough from the original that I can also say it's the best, and really the only successor to Super Metroid we've had. The original Metroid is kind of its own thing. It's hardcore, you are meant to keep track of your own progress, figure things out on your own. That is still a valid approach, just not accessible to the masses that big developers want to appeal to today.

I would select the La Mulana developers to make a new Metroid. Where every similar game after Super has failed is in the level design. It had tons of shortcuts and secret passageways that no other action adventure game, including other Metroids, Igavanias, and their imitators, have delivered. La Mulana sits next to SM and the best NES games in terms of labyrinthine layouts.

After FF15, I went back to DA:I.

I may  play this at some point. Dragon Age in general hasn't impressed me, but as far as AAA RPGs go this is one of the more interesting ones to me. Don't care for Geralt as a personality or his character "class."  And I'll always prefer controlling a party over a single character. I wonder how DAI is on the harder difficulties. More tactically satisfying?

I agree about the level design in the Disohonored games (More Deus Ex 1 quality than Human Revolution and Mankind Divided), but wish Arkane would stop with all the hand holding shit though (that you can turn off, but still). We didn't need awareness icons above guards in Thief, and I don't see the need for them now. Body posture and dialgoue would be more immersive. Or icons every time we approach a grabbable item; I think most people can remember that X picks things up. So they are still not at Looking Glass level when it comes to immersive design. I am glad they got rid of being essentially invisible when you peak around corners.

And in case you didn't check your inbox, thanks again for the key.

Yes D1 was the hardest by default. It was closer to its roguelike inspirtation than the others. Resources were far more hard to come by, couldn't just spam potions like D2.  No, it's not nostalgia, that's the way the game is if you haven't played it before and don't know what to expect.

Well if no one else takes Sniper, I will. But I'm ok with being at the back of the line, so if there is someone else you'd rather give it to first that's cool.
