What I've Been Playing

Arkham Asylum is still the best imo, followed by City.  They got the balance right.

Please tell me you're just using a screenshot from the web and you are playing the 2D sprite version of Rondo of Blood and not that ugly 2.5 version.  I absolutely loathe when 2D games get remade with 3D models (see: Bomberman, Flashback, Bionic Commando: Rearmed). Here's an opinion piece (not mine) that partly explains why:

Is this like a single player MMO?

Cataclysm: DDA (a zombie survival roguelike) taught me that duct tape is the key to all machine related issues. There are welders in the game, and you can build your own with high enough skill, but you can pretty much build or repair an entire vehicle with enough tape.

How are the mosquitos out by you?  Do you wear long sleeves? I got chewed the fuck up on Saturday in my T-shirt, even while wearing repellant. Parts of my arm are still raw and red. Every step we took kicked up scores of the bugs. The unusually high moisture in the Chicagoland area this year has made the woods a jungle. The steward didn't even have us work on our normal site because of the conditions.

Let us talk about current state of SciFi...

There is plenty of sci-fi, but hardly any science fiction.  Space ships, lasers, creatures, and wormholes aren't science, they are the horse or six-shooter in a western.  Hardly anyone is doing any serious, credible speculation or commentary (that isn't rehashed Blade Runner, Star tRek/Wars, or Asmivoian robot tropes).  The actual scientific entertainment is in literature and video games these days (Kerbal Space Program, Plague Inc., etc.)

Speaking of Ghost in the Shell: I think Patlabor 2 is one of the best pieces of science fiction committed to film (same director as the GiTS movie).  It's actually a political thriller in a Japan that is both present and future.  It's not about the mecha or aircraft, but about the country, its government, its worldview.

I rented this back in the day. Had some fun with it. Don't remember whether I found it difficult or not.  Love those old Genesis graphics.

The open world is. These games always claim to have hundreds of hours of gameplay, but I usually find that misleading. Like in Fallout 3, people could futz around for a hundred hours, but to do all the actual structured content took me 50-60.

I'll probably have to by the Poverty Edition on PS3, so less amazing graphics for me.

There are some games that caught my eye at E3, but what I've read about MGSVs gameplay and the attention to detail makes them seem last gen in comparison.

The Metal Gear Solid 2 trailer, right? That shit raised the bar and made everything else look primitive. I still watch that once a year. Alot of that shit didn't make it into the final game though.

Actually, I was quite stoked by what I saw of Street Fighter V at E3. The character models are  big improvement over 4, aesthetically.

Game announced that surprised me most was...

My usual salty and opinionated approach:  Dark Souls hype is totally contingent on actual gameplay, not interactive cinemajesty and canned set-pieces, not promises of "15 times the size of the last biggest open world ever!!!"  Nope, actual substance (shots fired, in all directions!). Since there hasn't been one smidgen of gameplay shown, I'm not surprised the hype isn't there yet.

I think I'll have to give Nier a chance now. I've heard interesting things about it, but I'm frugal these days and loathe to take chances that cost money.
