PVZ'd out, Far Crying Out Loud and iPod snafu update

Posted on 05/19/2013 at 03:50 PM | Filed Under Blogs

It truly is a game you can get lost in. It's world and mechanics are so well-designed that for me, I'll halt attention to anything else just to see if I can complete it without buying it from Gamefly (at the moment I can get it for $35).

Do we really need this?

I can't speak for everyone but I myself will never need this. I'm perfectly fine with the setup that I've been using since a child and there are still many gaming experiences that I've yet to encounter. Microsoft can experiement all they want but if they don't start working better with developers, they'll find that very few people will want to make the most out of whatever new device they come up with.

I'm very sorry about your mother. That's not easy to live with. Keep strong and continue to help her and I know she appreciates it. Our hearts and minds are with you and your family.

The Four Topics That Make Up This Week's Blog

I have a "Nook Tablet" as well. It rocks. I take it with me almost everywhere.

Ray Harryhausen passed today at 92

The grea thing about his f/x work was that his creations had personality and felt tangible in a way that most CGI work lacks. That it was painstaking work for he and his collaborators was even more amazing. I know younger people (or modern audiences in general) may find f/x like this dated (and by association, poor) but back then maverick technology was being pushed to its limit and viewers back then had no problem in letting our imaginations fill in the blanks. So of course it was real.

Rodriguez's 10 minute cooking school shows are all fantastic. And they all make me hungry. Especially that Sin City Breakfast Tacos video. Or the Planet Terror Texas BBQ vid. Or the......I need to stop.

Guacamelee, Batman and the death of an iPod

I played Guacamelee entirely on my Vita. I'm not sure if that was the intended way to play it but some of the features (swiping between your human and chicken form) puzzles me as to how they'd work on the PS3. They're a natural fit on the Vita and I was really wanting something like that on the go.

Oh, I know about Ni No Kuni. I kept my rental copy for 2 months before I sent it back and purchased a copy. That's the kind of game you'd want to live with. Also, I should give other Gamefly members a chance to play it. That and I'm not paying Gamefly $50 for a used game.

It's good to know that intrepid individuals like yourself keep giving internet browsers on Nintendo consoles/handhelds a chance when you know they'll break your heart.

Turtles In Time Re-shelled was not an enjoyable experience for me. The presentation and animations were weird, the controls didn't feel right and constantly stepping on things to have your turtle say "My toes, my toes!" is the equivalent of Toad grunting in the GBA version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (and just as annoying).

I LOVE Scott Pilgrim. I should play it more often.

Thoughts on the New Xbox and some updates etc

From a PR standpoint, Sony got the drop on Microsoft this year, from the emphasis on gaming at the PS4 presentation to the reports that working relations with developers (especially indies) are better than ever. The feeling/suspicion about Microsoft is that the next console will be more of an all-in-one entertainment center and less emphasis on games. The pressure on Microsoft to impress with their unveiling is huge. With internet gossip, of course it's completely out of control and not knowing anything doesn't stop people from shooting off at the mouth.

And like you, I'm a late adopter as well when it comes to gaming consoles. I'm always catching up anyway.
