In the end its a win for consumers to be sure, but to my mind they earned themselves no good will from it. Microsoft claims that it had been aware for some time now that its DRM measures were ill-received by consumers, but it only dropped them after noticing its lower-than-expected pre-order sales numbers. If our complaints about it factored into their decision to do so at all, it was only inasmuch as they put those pre-order numbers into context and informed what Microsoft would have to do in order to reverse the XBox One's fortunes. It certainly wasn't something that they did because they genuinely care about gamers or what we have to say, so I hardly think that it's worth rewarding them for it, y'know?
As for the whole PS3 update mess, I think that the key distinction between it and everything that Microsoft has tried to pull recently is that it wasn't intentional. So I really think that what's going to be most important is how Sony chooses to handle it. If they make good by everyone affected by it, then I don't see why they shouldn't retain the good will that they've managed to generate for themselves amongst consumers.
