I'm not saying you shouldn't get the timing down, but once you do Mega Man 2 etc. do reward you for going quickly as long as you get things timed correctly I find. Delaying my jumps or hesitating is always what kills me, whereas if I trust my timing it goes better for me. I think you can make either work and I'm not necessarily talking about barrelling through, but you can almost turn those older games into a Rayman Legends music stage in some cases if you know when to jump.
EDIT: I think a better way to put this is, I actually sometimes watch speed runs to get a handle on old platformers I'm having a hard time with. I think the reason they're able to do things so fast (when not using cheats etc.) is they nail down a particular rythm and I have a better time of things when I get my own rythm going than when I take too much time determining my next move. So I guess the game may not be intending to reward you for that, but it works in my favor more often than any kind of serious waiting/planning my next move does in those games.
