Quick Hits: My Nexus 7 Is Toast, And I Almost Bought A PS4

Posted on 11/14/2014 at 10:40 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Dammit I hate myself for not making good on that LEGO Steam sale last weekend.

I'd love some NFS Rivals too.

How would the PS4 have been $140?

You get the hell off Flock of Beagles' collective nutsacks. "I ran (Cause the sign said No Dogs Allowed)" is a national treasure.

I talked about the game itself on your review, so I'll address your points about the show here:

LoK IS a popular show, but its demographic is presumably much older (hi) than Nickelodeon's intended demographic in the under-10 crowd, having grown up with (or in my case found at age 22) the Avatar series and watches the show mainly online. That, along with Nickelodeon's epic missteps in handling the show (seriously, there are some things they could not possibly have done any worse from a TV programming perspective) have led to moving the show from cable to online-only.

While its season 1 TV ratings were actually really good (4.5 million viewers for its premiere and an avg. of 3.8 mil viewers for the episodes after that), the season 2 TV ratings suffered (gee, I wonder if it's cause they moved the show's time slot from a very successful Saturday morning slot to what is considered a dead zone in the TV industry/Friday night), yet the season 2 finale was the largest online event for nick.com in 2013 and the show has continued to be very popular online. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Korra#Ratings). Yes, I realize that's a Wikipedia link, but I've looked at the sources they use and they check out. Also, from the creators themselves: http://io9.com/creators-of-the-legend-of-korra-explain-the-shows-not-c-1611119124/+nathangrayson

So if you're looking only at TV ratings, you're missing the big picture in terms of the show's popularity. It's now become an online phenomenon, which can't be good for the ad revenue (advertisers still don't trust or put up much money for online ads, due to AdBlock etc.), but it still has millions of dedicated fans that stream and download the show.

As for the show's premise, no Korra cannot send people flying in the air without bending. WITH bending is a different story, but fights in the show usually carry a lot more weight and are much more even matches than the ones in the game where you roll over weak, samey enemies.

Also, Korra is the reincarnation of Aang, the main protagonist from The Last Airbender. There's a really neat two-part episode in season 2 that explains the origin of the avatar I won't spoil for you, but pro-bending (the dodgeball-like sport) has nothing to do with it. lol Pro-bending is used as a plot device in the season 1 storyline, but ultimately it's just another thing the creators put in to show how much time had passed and how culture had changed between The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, along with the technological advancements.

The Chinese dude in the game is supposedly a villain Korra faced between season 2 and 3 (looks way more like between 1 and 2 to me, but they got a writer from the show for the game so what do I know?). He seems heavily inspired by Amon, the season 1 villain played by anime voice actor Steve Blum (Spike from Cowboy Bebop along with a ton of others) who has an unexplained power to permanently take the ability to bend elements away from people, which is something only the avatar was thought able to do. He claims benders oppress non-benders and is the leader of a political group called the Equalists, whose goal it is to strip benders of their powers and therefore put everyone on equal footing.

Sorry for the rant, but a) the TV ratings behind-the-scenes stuff fascinates me as a Mass Communications student and b) I'm really passionate about this show. Obviously. haha

Yeah, I don't remember on-rails being in the N64 version of DDR. Or Dance Dance Revolution for that matter.

The exact same thing happens to me with the Internet. Damn nerdy video subscriptions.

Comic Book Haul #10 Mid November 12th 2014

I thought the same thing about The October Family when Nicelob1989 brought it up. Looks like a darker Addam's Family

By the way, I did get a chance to look at the Avatar comics I was wanting to on the Dark Horse website. I think I'll get The Promise and The Search sometime in the near future, and The Rift, once it's done and has a hardcover as well.

Always dig the talk about coloring. Is seeing Van Gogh's Starry Night different in person? By the way, I own a Batman t-shirt from Ript Apparel I got for free from Schmoes Know for winning a phot caption contest that has a bunch of Internet gaming celeb sigs on it. It's called "Starry Knight" and mixes a Batman pose with a Starry Night-esque background.

How much is a comic usually gonna cost you these days? Didn't know $5 was high. Also, when comic book readers say "trades," does that mean they are buying all issues in a series at once? I know you mean a single issue by "floppy," but I hear the term trades all the time, but not exactly sure what it means. Also, what comes in a longbox exactly?

Batman Superman sounds intriguing.

Anyway, thanks for another Wednesday video, I'm off to finish Snowpiercer. Did that movie ever have a comic? Seems suited for it.

I'd say review the Batman Superman one you loved the cover for. But do whatever you want to.

Someone gifted me Metro 2033 n' I don't need it
