Yakuza Like a Dragon: 7 Compliments and 7 Complaints

Posted on 12/02/2020 at 09:15 PM | Filed Under Blogs

Depends on which Dragon Quest(s). The ones I've played are not as cutscene heavy as Yakuza.  You can run from fights. You may run into more powerful enemies in some of the ones that are more open world, but since you can run it's not a problem.

I'm not clear on what you're complaint about the job system is.  Usually how job systems work is you accrue enough points to move into another class and then you make the change when you want.

Mine are Terraria, Metal Slug X and 3, Doom 64, Shadowgate (NES), Fallout: New Vegas, X-Com: UFO Defense, Deus Ex, Dwarf Fortress, the MetroidVanias. Games I can instantly jump into and "feel at home."

1917 was very good to me. Maybe not something that warrants repeate viewings, but the best theater experience of 2019

Terraria is the GOAT..

The beginning doesn't impress, I admit. You are slow, weak, don't have any good items. It takes at least an hour of underground exploration before you start , unless you get lucky with an early gold chest. I think it pays to watch a video of late game to see the potential that awaits you. All that stuff I said I had came after about the third boss, and there are two more before mid game. Then you go into Hardmide with new enemies, bosses ,  and a ton more items.

When you consider that we can play every game ever made (with mods or rom hacks to enhance them, essentially making a game immortal) along with the current stuff, and now indie games can rival and outdo games that cost dozens of millions to make, I have to agree. Internet changed everything.

Terraria is the GOAT..

The amount of content rivals anything out there. The NPC interactions and homesteading  aren't nearly as involved as a game like AC, but it's everything else - combat, bosses  mining, exploration, crafting-  that have can have me playing a single world for 50+ hours. Some people have put in hundreds of hours in the game, if not 1000

Definitely my favorite Doom. My first experience with the series was the PS1 version, which also had an ambient soundtrack by the same composer as 64. It established what Doom is in my mind, and 64 takes it further. And what they did with the color palette is very cool, I love the look. The Brutal mod brings Revenants and Spider Masterminds back to it. No Arch Viles unfortunately. And it makes the weapons feel even beefier. It's the most fun I've had with an action game in a long time, unless you count Terraria.

I'm aware of the Shadowgate remake. It has a totally different feel. Not just the look but the music has been LotR-ified. Now it's like an epic fantasy adventure compared to the NES version's funhouse /hauntedhouse vibe, the latter being more novel in this day and age.

Falcom is forever. They always had a certain feel that was cozy. Big LotW fan, I was mesmerized as a kid. So much mystery in the days before online guides. Game seemed full of possibilities. I'm surprised no indies have tried Legacy-likes, or Faxanadu- likes. La Mulana is the closest I guess. More interesting than yet another Metroid or SotN wannabe.

I bought it on GoG too...about 5 years ago. Just recently got  around to playing. I tried a torrent before, just to see what it was like.

Did they bring the Brutal mod to consoles for Doom 1/2?

Only seen the Mac version in screenshots. From what I can tell, the NES version is definitive. Definitely try it wheyyou have the chance.

AC is bananas! Someone on another forum I used to post on maintained it was the greatest game of all time. Just an opinion of course, but I can see why he felt that way. It's definitely one of the greatest, and maybe the greatest in it's genre. But it's not for the impatient or people who need something flashing or exploding at all times. There is a lot to learn, but worth it imo.

Games Played This Sunday

Never played BB myself. I assumed it had the summon signs you could click on for instructions, like the Souls games.

I like getting stuck, but only on adventure game puzzles.  In an action game it's slightly infuriating because it kills forward momentum
