An Interview with Super Smash Bros Expert, Prog
EVO Overall
PB: EVO 2013 was, in my opinion, one of my favorites to watch. How was it being in attendance?
Prog: EVO 2013 wasn't a tournament, it was an experience. The only thing I really missed out on this year was the experience of being a player. Otherwise, the booths, commentating, spectating… it was all otherworldly and I was honored to be a part of it in any capacity.
PB: Other than Smash, what games at EVO got your attention?
Prog: I grew up on Capcom, so Xian's performance was awe inspiring in SSF4 AE 2012 [Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition 2012]. Seeing the Wong Factor take place live is insane, he has me rethinking my UMVC3 [Ultimate Marvel versus Capcom 3] team. Reynald's performance in KoF [King of Fighters] was spectacular; Lord Knight is a friend of mine, so I wanted to see his performance in P4A [Persona 4 Arena]. Unfortunately, I missed MK9 [Mortal Kombat 9] and Injustice Top 8, but I like Injustice as a game as well as watching their struggle with how to deal with stage differences. Really reminds me of Smash in its formative years.
PB: Did you compete?
Prog: I entered UMVC3 but realized my team needed work, so transferred entry to [SSF4]AE. Unfortunately, I was backup commentator during my pool, and one of the main pair wasn't able to show up. However, as we speak, I have UMVC3 training mode loaded, thinking of how to work on my team.
PB: EVO is known for displaying a huge sense of community. Do you think that holds true?
Prog: You definitely feel like you're part of something huge at EVO. A lot of people say there's a rift between Smash and traditional fighters, which may be true. You wouldn't know it there. I mean, Taylor Hicks entered Smash, Dan Dinh came to spectate, I personally saw Infiltration, Ono, Ricky Ortiz, Seth Killian among many others watching and admiring the game. The crowd roared for a 12 year old game. It was a homecoming for a little brother.
PB: What would you say to someone who is new to fighting games about EVO?
Prog: Go to EVO. It's one thing to watch it on a stream, but witnessing it in person holds no equal. Everyone aspires to be on that main stage, but even if you never make it, witnessing it all is close enough.
PB: Any final comments?
Prog: I'd like to give a lot of love to the crew of Melee It On Me, University of Smash, and the entire Smash community. In addition, thanks to the EVO staff for giving us this opportunity, the speed running community for their support, the traditional FGC for welcoming us home for a weekend. Also, major thanks to Nintendo for a game that I've fallen in love with, allowing us to showcase our best to the world, and giving us all something to be a part of.
