Genre Deathwatch 2011

We’ve seen the fall of rhythm games, what’s the next one to kick the bucket?

It has been roughly six years since rhythm gaming really hit the market with force, thanks in large part to the runaway success of the Guitar Hero series. Before long, plastic guitars were supplemented with plastic drums, and microphones, and the birth of full band rhythm gaming was upon us. Eventually Harmonix landed on the only logical conclusion for such a genre – the ability to play real instruments to real notation within the game. At the point of reaching the plateau, the genre has been given a death sentence. Activision is halting the Hero series and Harmonix has been sold and downsized, needless to say, things are looking pretty grim for the future of rhythm gaming.

PixlBit is Hiring!

We have a number of positions available and not all of them require you to write.

Back in 2008 I had the opportunity to realize a longtime dream of mine - writing and reporting on video games. Tales from Space: About a Blob Review

A charming platformer that pays homage to its roots.

Sometimes a simple gameplay mechanic can pigeonhole an entire game. Take Tales from Space: About a Blob, for example. Within 30 seconds of the first level, comparisons started pooling in the back of my mind like little gelatinous blobs of reasoning. Is it Katamari Damacy? I mean, you roll around collecting stuff with the goal of making yourself big enough to collect even larger items, so that assumption should be safe, right? But the fact is, About a Blob doesn't just pull its inspiration from one game - it pulls from a lot of them. From Little Big Planet to the old NES version of Strider and every good to decent platformer in between - About a Blob pays homage to its roots.
