Betrayer Hands On Preview

Early adopters looking to get in on the ground floor of something possibly amazing might want to check out this intriguing alpha by Blackpowder Games.

Like it or not, the Age of the Alpha Release is here.  Whether it’s Steam Early Access, or more humble releases like Sir, You Are Being Hunted, and Cube World, or even Bohemia’s Arma 3, alpha releases are everywhere these days.  It’s a controversial subject - some are complaining that companies are charging for incomplete products they may or may not finish, while others believe the process helps fund games that otherwise might never be developed.  It’s hard for me to find a suitable metaphor for this complex matter other than likening it to buying a fruit and waiting for it ripen.

Digital Mystery Tour Episode 16: Guitar Heroes

Are you ready to rock?!

I said, ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?! Boy, I sure hope so, because I've got some video game tracks that will melt your face off! I'll admit that I'm relatively new to rock music, as I was raised on the music of the '40s, '50s, and '60s, but in recent years I've really learned to rock out. So I wanted to share some of that love to you, the listeners. Unfortunately, I couldn't fill a brandy glass with nothing but brown M&Ms, so Ozzy didn't go on. Sorry about that. Oh, and here's that amazing music video by Tomoyasu Hotei. Enjoy!

Rayman Legends Review

One of the best modern day platformers.

Two years ago, Rayman hit the scene with one of his most inspired adventures yet. It took series staples and wove them into one of the most beautiful and interesting platformers I’d ever seen. Well, Rayman Legends is now here and it somehow manages to surpass Rayman Origins in every way imaginable. It applies the same great platforming to gorgeous new inspired worlds and even manages to make it enjoyable for more than one concurrent player this time around.

Do Not Fall Review

Watch out for the killer ladybugs.

Do Not Fall is a top-down platformer filled with cute fluffy bunnies, jolly pigs, adorable snowmen, and all things in between. Don’t let their innocent demeanor fool you—most things aim to knock you to your ultimate demise. The game takes your trust and turns it against you when the snowmen become murderous and the ladybugs become killer. Not to mention the hawks that dive-bomb your position and the bulls that suddenly take you for a matador.

Pixel Art Mosaics Invade North Texas

Video games IRL.

I spend a lot of time playing video games, but when I started seeing images from the games I love around my part of town, I was a little freaked out. First, I saw a Creeper from Minecraft staring back at me on my drive to work, and then later happened upon a Pooka from Dig Dug. With a bit more poking around, I was able to find five little mosaics in Keller and Fort Worth that someone has installed in public areas – presumably without any sort of city funding or consent.

Digital Mystery Tour Episode 15: Balance and Ruin

One of the best tributes to Final Fantasy VI out there.

Recently I heard a new fan project by the fine folks over at OverClocked Remix. it's a 4 disk set of music inspired by (read: covers of music from) Final Fantasy VI. If you've got any nostalgia for the game, any love for the series, if you're a fan of Uemastu or if you even like good music in general, you really owe it to yourself to check it out.
