BaD: Shortest Games #14

A few years ago, I passed on meeting with Rooster Teeth at PAX and my brothers gave me heck for that!

BaD #17: Cleopatra Fortune

Posted on 02/24/2022 at 09:09 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Back in the final years of the original PlayStation, a lot of companies would release budget games that were only 10 to 20 bucks.  I got a few of those, but one of them I missed was Cleopatra's Fortune.  I saw it in stores, but it just had a generic picture of the King Tut coffin so I had no idea what kind of game it was. And then when I played it on the Taito collection, I was like, "Aw crap, I could've been playing this awesome puzzler years earlier!"

And of course, I'm sure you remember my other reply where I talked about how awesome the music was and that the main character in Cleopatra's Fortune is also in Puchi Carat, another Taito game that came out around that time.

OST So Good! #17: Kirby- Planet Robobot

ALL Kirby games have good music in them!  That's why they reuse so many themes.  I also love how the last boss in Planet Robobot is just a different version of Star Nova from Super Star.  Kirby games have a surprising amount of hidden lore!

I stopped playing mainline Pokemon games after Black and White.  But I'll probably pick up that new Arceus game at some point this year.  I hear it's good and different.

BaD #16: Chack'n Pop

The most notable thing about Chack'n Pop is that it's a Bubble Bobble prototype.  They even use some of the same enemies.  Chack'n also makes cameos in many other Taito games.

OST So Good! #16: Yoshi's Woolly World

Posted on 02/24/2022 at 08:56 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I totally agree with you about the music in Yoshi's Woolly World being great, and that it was the closest to reliving the magic of the original game.  Yoshi's Crafted World wasn't near as good, but I liked it anyway.  But then, I also liked Yoshi's Island DS, so what do I know?

Here are more songs from Woolly World that I liked:

I also love how all the tracks in this game are happy and cheerful and then you go into the lava stage and hear this:

I also loved the amiibo support for this game.  I could be a Kirby Yoshi, a Mega Man Yoshi, or a Pac-Man Yoshi!  And if you liked the music in this game, then you should check out Kirby's Epic Yarn (both were made by the same folks).

I'm not big into third person shooter games, but I LOVED Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.  It was the Transformers game i wished for when I was a kid.  I loved being able to transform at any time.  "You mean I have to push through this gauntlet of soldiers shooting at me?  Oh wait, I can turn into a helicopter and fly to the next ledge!  Never mind!"

I wish I would've played Exit, as it was an original Taito game.

BaD #15: Cameltry

Posted on 02/22/2022 at 08:33 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I first learned about this game when they ported it to the SNES.  Back then the SNES game was called "On the Ball" in the US.  I always wanted to play it, since it had a Marble Madness vibe, but I never got to play the SNES version!  It was never at any game rental places near me, and I wasn't about to pay full price for it then.  So I'm glad it was on the Taito collection.

OST So Good! #15: Mario Kart 8

Posted on 02/22/2022 at 08:31 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I love the jazzy, instrumental tunes of Mario Kart 8.  One cool thing I liked is the title screen music, if you let it play long enough, they play an upbeat version of the ORIGINAL title theme from SNES Super Mario Kart!  Every Mario Kart game has good music, even the RC Mario Kart Live game!  If you listen to my first podcast, you'll learn that SNES Super Mario Kart is one of my top five favorite games of all time!
