Wednesday's Notes

I did dedicate myself to those things for a while, but I had too many other interests that I wanted to pursue as well, so now I just do about an hour a day of either lifting, running, or martial arts.

I didn't care for SF4 though. Too slow, too stiff (compared to Alpha series, my favorite SF games) a lot of the characters were ugly as sin and didn't look near as good as their previous incarnations. That big hands/big feet thing does not translate well to 3D, and they did it again in SFV :(

I wanted Ryu/Ken's arms from SF3, but to be that big and cut you have to roid. And then your calves would have to also be humongous or you'd look like a fool lol.

The bosses are what fucked me up in Mega Man games. Such small arenas to fight them in, and tricky patterns. More importantly, they weren't that interesting to me to persevere. Didn't feel as badass as fighting a Contra or Metal Slug boss.

I prefer the arcade ports of Golden Axe to the Genesis ones. Golden Axe 2 is ok, I remember feeling meh about it when it came out on Genesis. Definitely not as hype as when Golden Axe first came out. As far as I'm concerned, the real Golden Axe sequel is Revenge of Death Adder and is the best game in the series imo. GA3 is a p.o.s.

Not really sad imo. Producers>>>consumers. You have something going for you that most people don't.  It's a kind of wealth, like owning and/or living on resource rich land. Soul feeding wealth.

Ultima 3 was pretty much the first open world game, or the first notable one. With this game the series would form a habit of massive innovative and influence with each title.

CRPG predates JRPG. It was used to differentiate personal computer RPG from console RPGs, the latter often being like truncated versions of the former. There is little use for the term CRPG now though.

And yeah, these so called genres we come up with are too exclusive to be useful outside of the super enthusiast circles. There are multi millions of people playing games now, most of which are not super hardcore or frequent forums.

Yeah, Jak 2 was drab. Blue-grey is the dominant color. It's gross, don't even bother, go directly to Jak 3

Zero Mission. Nice to look at but you know at least the first game, with all its faults, had open ended exploration after you got a few powers, and it was a challenge. ZM is just watered down. Might as well just play Super again. I didn't care for Fusion either, but at least it had a different concept.

Echoes was cool. More visually interesting in many areas than the original. I never did finish it though. Still better than Zero Mission.

I pretty much frown on 3D platformers, but Sunshine was fun because of Fludd. If you're not going to have precision platforming, which most 3D platformers don't relative to what's possible in a side scroller, than having a fun traversal mechanic is the next best thing.

I think today there is a lot of revisionism surrounding Wind Waker. It's become hip to say "Oh I always thought WW was the best." Yeah right, no one thought that at the time. Counter culture/hipsterism at its finest. Still good though, with sublime environmental graphics.

Metroid Prime is one of the GOATs imo. I bought a GC just for that and REmake.

JSRF really stood out to me. Only got to play it once at a friend's house. Very memorable.
