Ben versus Felicia Day (Star-trek rant)

Posted on 11/26/2013 at 12:32 PM | Filed Under Blogs

If you think about the Original Star Trek series, Into the Darkness really adds a lot of confident and strong females. Yes none of them pilot a starship and the men are still in all the leadership positions, but this is the early days of Starfleet. The movie updates the sexual politics of the sixties to match today's world, but some say it's not enough. Well, everyone wants to be Kirk, even the women, because he's in a position of power. Fine, be that way. But being in a position of power isn't everything. I would be very disappointed to see women start playing the roles of men and acting in exactly the same way in media. I hope women bring something new, some unique perspective like what they tried with Voyager before 6 of 9 brought it right back to eye candy for males. I'm tired of brotastic, power trip heroes full of braggadacio. I say, flush 'em down the toilet no matter who plays them.

I think Ripley from Alien/Aliens is still one of the best female leads. She's strong but still a woman unlike Vasquez who's clearly just trying to have the biggest balls.

I couldn't help looking at the paperback cover art for the two books you mentioned. I love these old covers.

Man, I wanna play X-Com so bad. I still haven't cracked the shrink wrap. I'm going to get to it soon though. Probably in December.

I'm actually a Burnout Revenge fan. Had trouble getting into Paradise initially but want to give it another try. I just got Bugbear's Ridge Racer Unbounded and I have Criterion's Need For Speed Hot Pursuit. Just need to find the time to dig in. I thought of Split/Second too this evening. I've always wanted to play that one.

Ever since Criterion got involved with Need For Speed, I keep hoping these games are more like Burnout than Forza (I know this game is by Ghost, but the wiki page says most of their team came from Criterion). I don't like sim racers much and I especially don't like having to worry about damaging my car. I want a car brawler like Destruction Derby but with races not arenas. That's pretty much Burnout and no one has done a game like that since Burnout Paradise in 2008! COME ON!

Skylanders Swap Force Review

Ah, that's kinda too bad about the easy gameplay. I thought it might've been fun to play even as an adult but it looks like it's primarily a kids game. I love the look of the game and the figures. One day, as I've done with the Lego games, I may play it for achievements and the novelty of owning a few figurines.
