same here. I usually listen to podcasts while I play a game. Grinding levels type games especially. Warframe, StarTrekOnline, etc.
or how many times have they said Nintendo was dead? Like every recent console it seems and look at them now.
Congrats on your new baby!
On the single player thing...But I've also heard older game journos talk about how 'death of single player talk' has happened before and it never really happened. There are plenty of single player games out that are super awesome, a lot from Japan, but they are still there. I don't know. I hope it's just noise. I also want to play that Multiplayer Metal Gear game so I'm one of the bad ones.
I just listened to the pod and it's great! You both sound very comfortable and jump right into topics and dig deep enough before moving on to the next game. The pacing is perfect. This should be another regular podcast on Pixlbit. I'd listen to it. I sure want a more thorough coverage of EvilWithin2 when you're done with it. Since horror type games are still very niche, I think its a great genre for this cast, fitting called 'TheLowerLevel' for stuff that isn't trending in gaming, like indie, retro, etc.
I didn't play Pokemon original gen, but I liked Oshowatt, the otter cat thing.
I cant wait to hear what you guys come up with for this podcast. What is it about? New games? Retro games? Horror games? Just for fun?
As for scary media, I can't pin-point it but the first time I played TheEvilWithin, some areas in particular made me feel very nervous. I think it might have been because of the janky controls combined with what the game expects you to do made things harder. Other than that, the village in the beginning of RE4 and the atmosphere of RE1 Remake are still pretty eerie. Especially at night with headphones full blast.
Scariest life moment was flying. Turbulance over the ocean on a 15 hour flight at night. Dark sky, dark water, no light and shaky ass fucking seats all the way!!!!!!
Comedy for me is Sean of the Dead and Supernatural. They mix the two pretty well.
Bayonetta kind of scares me with her gun shoes and demon transformation...umm, I guess Bayonetta 2 because she looked the best on that system.
Love Left4Dead2. Have you played the Resident Evil 2 mod? Pretty neat! The recreated RE2 campaign, at least in PC version anyway.
I usually play Horror type games throughout the end of the year. I never finished Alien Isolation because of a dumb save kiosk glitch in the PC version when it first launched, but its on sale now on PSN for $10, so may try it again. Quite loved the atmosphere, which is a big thing with me in games. Meanwhile, I've been playing Bloodborne again, which is quite dark. I might do another EvilWithin1 playthough again this weekend.
First off, congrats on being on NWP! I look forward to hearing that episode. Maybe it will get you motivated to do more podcasts and just talk about horror things. Don't mean to give you more work to do, but I wouldnt have been excited for Evil Within 2 until reading this. I really loved the first, with all the problems simply because of the atmosphere and weirdness. I want to see more of this in games honestly.
What did you have in mind for help for your game? I don't have my PC right now and I'm exclusively working off of my Macbook until I get replacement parts which are very pricey. Since my PC is getting old and can't really run newer games I'm not that motivated to get it fixed right away, as my laptop and tablet are enough for me to do what I need for now, but I do have a lot of video, image and sound software on my mac and I've done a bit of web coding in the past. What coding language or software are you planning to work on? Is there freeware or vids for tutorials for this stuff? Maybe you can turn your western novel into a game somehow? Sounds neat.
I gotta give your album a listen real soon!
This reminds me of that article in Wall Street Journal, or some other major newspaper, that gave Bloodborne a bad review or attempted to warn people from buying it because it was too hard for casual players. I think in that case he was thinking of parents spendibg $460+ on a new game and console that might just make people frustrated and angry on christmas, so it was more of a consumer awareness article which seemed fair. Of course, most other gaming sites praised the game with high reviews, but their audience are hardcore enthusiasts who the game was targeting. All in all I agree with Nick in that reviewing games is tricky now because you have to know your audience, thus I stick to reviewers, youtubers that share similar tastes and dislikes in games as me. WIth Mad Max, I remember a similar arguement broke out on Giantbomb, where one person said they really liked the car customization and driving, while others just dismissed the game entirely for being a shameless Shadow of War Clone movie tie-in. That dude convinced me to want to play the game actually.
I'm replaying through Bloodborne right now and it is still very streamlined gameplay. I think it would make it hard to go back to other souls games, not saying they're bad. I appreciate the horror and atmosphere as much as the mechanics here. Although I still have the same problem I had at first, which is having to farm bloodviles. It's a peeve, not a game breaking thing, but last night I was fighting the '3 grim reaper ghost' bosses and I ran out of blood viles, so I have to log in to farm just to retry the fight and it just killed the mood for me. I ended up watching more Exorcist TV show and reading before going to bed which is not what I planned on doing. Very annoying.
I love all these games you listed by the way. Now you're posting precious game blogs on Facebook? I'm sad to miss out on them. I really like this blog. Where is old whatsacow? Come back to us...
