How do you Zelda?

Posted on 01/03/2018 at 11:40 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I think I played Zelda mostly like you. I was more interested in exploring the world, going to every spot on the map, taming horses, and experimenting with the game's systems. I only stopped to do Shrine's so I could upgrade my health and stamina to aid in my exploration.

I have some complaints about the game in that while I like the approach they took to this Zelda, I would have appreciated some more of the old Zelda. I really would have appreciated some more items. A grappeling hook would have been nice, or at least a bit more progression. As the game is, the stuff you get in the opening is all you get, and as such, you never get that satisfaction of getting a new item and coming back to an inaccessible place and opening up new areas like you did in the previous games.

Dungeons are also a bit shit. As an open world exploration game, it's a masterpiece. As a Zelda game, it's a bit eh. Although Zelda herself is the most compelling she's ever been.

This game did wow me though. I got the same feeling I felt when playing Xenoblade Chronicles X - I wanted to push on just to see what was around the next corner. I don't usually get that in games though outside of the one I mentioned, some Bethesda games and Piranha Bytes games.

Thanks man. I kind of had a mental breakdown a few months back that lead me to acting in some terrible ways, hurting people around me, being incredibly selfish, and acting like a stupid 14 year old kid.

A lot of the depression I've been feeling at the moment is guilt over that. I know I'm a lot better, and I know I'm getting help, but to me it still doesn't change how much I hate myself for letting it happen.

I haven't actually read or listened to much lately. For quick recommendations, I'm reading Joe Hill's N0S4R2, which is a great horror book that actually doesn't really have anything to do with vampires, at least not in the traditional sense. It's a weird book with great characters and some really amazing villains. I'd also recommend checking out Diablo Swing Orchestra's new album as well as Chelsea Wolfe's.

It's well worth it, especially if you liked what you played beforehand.

Do it! Although it's also worth reading Cary's review, as he has vastly different opinions to me. For example, I loved the controls, but he found them to be a bit off.

Huh. You reviewed it so I guess you played it on release. Maybe the tightened the controls in a patch or something because I really enjoyed the controls, and I am super pedantic about that sort of thing. Maybe it's an issue with the PS4 version. Though, I also haven't played a Mario game in a long ass time, so maybe it fairs poorly in comparison.

I also didn't like the stealth bits though.

What did you think about the humour in this game?

I have played Prey for about 12 hours, and I haven't ever had to go back to a quest giver. Mostly, I suspect, because like System Shock, there's barely anyone left alive on Talos 1. I highly suggest playing it, as it truly feels like the successor to the System Shock games - even more than Bioshock. It's a little uneven, there are some weird design choices that I mentioned in my latest blog, but it is well worth a look especially since it spends a fair amount of time on sale.

Have you played Divinity: Original Sin 2? It's basically the spiritual successor to Ultima 7 - right down to starting off solving a murder. It's an rpg that actually lets you roleplay, and there are tons of different ways to finish a quest. Really quite excellent in my humble opinion.

I got a Switch!!!!

Firstly, I've been away for a while, so what were your opinions about Hollow Knight.

Apart from Steamworld Dig 2, the other 2 are exclusives. Haven't played either of those games, so if you get them let me know what you think!

Get Hollow Knight asap. You'll love it. It's the real successor to Dark Souls, and one of my all time fav metroidvania games. I played it on Steam, but think it would be magical on Switch.

Don't have a Switch yet. We ordered one a while back but had to cancel the order for money reasons. Hoping to get one soon though. My friend has one and some that I've tried or watched them play that are really great are:

Golf Story - an RPG about golfing. Much better than it sounds.

Steamworld Dig 2 - Much, MUCH better than the original. More Metroidvania-esque than the original, much weirder, and has a pretty decent story as well.

Fast RMX. I played the original version on Wii-U, and it was a great F-Zero style game. I here The Switch version is even better.

Man. I don't think I've ever sunk as much time into a game in one year as you have with Minecraft - with the exception of Guild Wars 2. Not judging though as I'm super ADHD with games and probably have just as many hours clocked in the games I've played combined xD

December 2017 Recap

Prey is amazing if a little uneven. There were parts where I was like "this is definitely finding a place in my greatest of all time, and others where I wanted to uninstall it and never touch it again - and I'm only 12 hours in. I think the positives definitely outweigh the negatives though.

God, I have sunk way too many hours into Destiny. Firstly, the main story is actually a ton of fun this time around, and feels like what Halo 4 and 5 should have been (with some obvious differences to make it more Halo-like). Then I spent way too many hours in Crucible because it's the only multiplayer shooter I've ever actually been good at, usually getting around 2.0 or 3.0 K/D. And oh boy is it pretty.

And yes, I have seriously enjoyed throwing snowballs at my friends, much to their dismay.

Momodora is excellent, and if you like it you should absolutely play Hollow Knight, which I think is actually secretly maybe the best Metroidvania that's not Super Metroid or Aria of Sorrow.

Haven't played Kiwami, but I did really get into Yakuza Zero quite a bit and loved it.

I have spent an embarrassing amount of hours on Stardew Valley...
