I don't know if I agree with you that it's better than SMW, but it's certainly more creative both visually and gameplay-wise.
I've always loved the game's aesthetic.
The Tetris thing sounds interesting, but I always think with these books I'll end up already knowing what happened and/or just reading stuff I could find on the Internet. Let me know if I'm wrong.

I have that fear in epic, continuous games like Zelda where there are actual puzzles I need to remember controls for. Action games where every button is a different version of shoot or stab like DmC, not so much.
