PixlBit's 2011 Supplemental Awards

Just when you thought awards season was over...

Winner – Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception refines an already award-winning formula to a series with spectacular plot, which makes it worthy of our best story award. The third installment delves into the psychological inquiries that motivate Drake, such as what an orphaned treasure hunter must be running from, what psychedelic experiences a hero can have when pushing himself to his limits, and the effects a driven man can have on his allies. Drake’s Deception is full of intriguing topics.

And even though Nathan hunts on the trail of Sir Francis Drake again, the story rarely feels stale thanks to the naturally evolving set pieces.  The action drifts from chateaus in the forests of France to shipwreck graveyards and truly expansive deserts. Through it all, the story functions as an action adventure plot on par with the highest of its genre. It also functions on a metaphorical level of Nathan Drake combing the depths of his soul to figure out his drive in life.  Yet even at its most symbolic, Naughty Dog emphasizes a story accessible for all gamers. The universality of Drake’s story would otherwise be something lost on most, so the flow and beat throughout Drake’s Deception should really be commended. While Drake’s journey may seem like a wild goose chase, Naughty Dog never gets lost in the woods and brings it all together in the end.

These types of awards are always fun. Surprised Uncharted 3 didn't win best graphics (though I played BF3 on PS3). Would have picked either Rayman or Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet for art direction. I agree with a lot of these picks though.

In Memory of Michael Alvarado

When 1up started the process of shutting down, there was one person who seemed to lead to charge to congregate the community in a single place. After his first visit here, it wasn't long before a slew of new members arrived. The site came alive and the real story of PixlBit began - the one that involves all of you. The person I'm referring to is, of course, Michael Alvarado, otherwise known as Michael117.
