Digital Mystery Tour Episode 17: Distant Worlds

A memory of exotic lands in a world known as...Vana'Diel.

Welcome back to Digital Mystery Tour. With the recent release of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, it seemed like a perfect time to look back at some of my favorite songs from the previous online Fantasy: XI. I'm a little under the weather, so I let the music do the talking for me, and close things out with a couple tracks from A Realm Reborn. If you have fond memories of FF XI, you may want to check out the Nerds Without Special I did earlier in the year, which features a ton more of the game's soundtrack, as well as some fun and touching stories. Enjoy, and I realize the bagpipes in the San d'Oria theme can be a tad grating on the ears, but what can I say? It's home to me.

Digital Mystery Tour Episode 16: Guitar Heroes

Are you ready to rock?!

I said, ARE YOU READY TO ROCK?! Boy, I sure hope so, because I've got some video game tracks that will melt your face off! I'll admit that I'm relatively new to rock music, as I was raised on the music of the '40s, '50s, and '60s, but in recent years I've really learned to rock out. So I wanted to share some of that love to you, the listeners. Unfortunately, I couldn't fill a brandy glass with nothing but brown M&Ms, so Ozzy didn't go on. Sorry about that. Oh, and here's that amazing music video by Tomoyasu Hotei. Enjoy!

Nerds Without Pants Episode 30: Growing up Geek

Yeah, Julian probably needs therapy...

Wow, Nerds Without Pants turns 30! Funny, the show doesn't seem a day over 22. Aging is the topic of the day this time around, as Julian wonders what changes are in store for the modern geek. Before that, it's Consumption Junction time once again.

Dragon's Crown, Lightning Returns, and Becoming the Thing We Hate

I bet this discussion could actually go somewhere if we'd all just stop acting like children.

There's been a lot of controversy just about everywhere these days regarding how women are portrayed in video games. Frankly, I'm glad to see it. Controversy has a way of exposing us to new perspectives and fresh opinions in a way few other things can. It's given many women a platform to discuss how things like this make them feel sexualized, marginalized, and mistreated. It's also given others the chance to promote the radical idea that perhaps the size of a woman's bust shouldn't dictate how we perceive them; that big boobs don't necessarily mean a shallow character with a tiny brain. It's also indirectly fed Jenn Frank's idea (which has since garnered international attention) for a BoobJam: A call for the creative souls among us whose coding Kung Fu is strong, to create games about boobs, with the caveat that the content show breasts from a more practical or biological angle as opposed to the typical straight male gaze, or sexually gratifying perspective.

The Travel Log: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Part 1) Hands On Preview

Hesitant about FF XIV? Understandable, but you may be surprised....

It's unprecedented for an MMORPG to get a second curtain call, but that's exactly what's happening with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It's an almost completely rebuilt version of the disastrous original that is going to get a second chance at life next month. After playing a good amount of the Phase 3 beta, I’m ready to believe that the game could right all of the wrongs of its 2010 release.

Sony Drops Some Bombs at E3 2013

The PS4's opening salvo for the console wars is a lethal one.

The legacy of the PlayStation brand is an interesting one. Back in 1995, Sony was the scrappy underdog, and fought tooth and claw to ascend to the top of the video game heap, crippling Sega and putting Nintendo on shaky ground for the first time ever. The PlayStation 2 cemented their dominance over the market, with tons of instant classics released for the console. But by 2005, Sony had gotten soft, comfortable at the top. Their hubris was easy to see, and even the biggest PlayStation fans have to agree that they made some bone-headed moves at the beginning of the PS3’s life cycle. If one thing was made abundantly clear at Sony’s E3 press conference, it’s that they’ve come to reclaim their fans, as well as win over a whole new host of them.
