Archie Comics who own the rights to Sonic the Hedgehog (20 years) and Mega Man (25 years) are finally doing a crossover of the Two, True, Blue, Bot, Bashers in a 12 part event for 4 months. To celebrate both the Mega Man franchise and the Sonic comics anniversary.

Part 6&7 [here]

I'm finally on Schedule with my reviews (actually I'm behind but have enough lead time and will to do them Embarassed), now I'll get down to a more in-depth view of this 8th issue of this crossover.

Yay!

Sonic Universe #53

Writer: Ian Flynn             Pencils: Tracy Yardley

When Worlds Collide Part 8: Liberation

Cracks, cracks and more cracks, In Dr Eggman and Wily's plans that is. It's fun to see how desprately they attempt to thwart the efforts of our heroes like always (the metatextuals of which will be in the conclusion). This is just a progression of the previous issue but it's significant as it plants very well into one of the coolest splashpages you might ever see next issue (for those who don't know a splash page is essentially one panel across 2 or more pages).

As we read the issue Flynn drops more context to the Zone Sonic and co are in, looking at all the all the little nods to both series combined (even the SatAM cartoon) and it hits harder just how messed up everything is and at the same time familiar yet unimaginative (in a good way).

The plot continues to thicken after Sonic and Mega Man are once again fight Robotisized Masters, Sonic's former allys, Meanwhile In the Wily Egg (good griefTongue Out) setup for the next issue as the 2 EFF's pull out all the stops to buy themselves time, the issue ends with a familiar bot.

Where the art shines is the actions scenes, partly because the styles very in the escalation of the fights, i felt Yardley really brought it this issues it all felt kinetic and easy to follow, (you may not think that's saying much but if you've suffered the 90s and DC Nu52Undecided) but overall it really feels fun especially some of the more goofy moments which there are plenty. As I've mensiond Yardley uses various styles of panels in this comic, but not just in construction but we get wide angles, variatons on perspective and through him I found out Rush had a projector in his nose...

Conclution

Excuse the vagueness of some of the descriptions, it's just that the connet should be partly a surprise and is too on the nose to talk about.

Flynn is very methodical here and I'm starting to see a pattern what might feel like padding is more or less, he's expressing that the reason Eggman and Wily fail so constantly - built up to in this issue - is that they keep doing the same thing over and over, they vary in style or size from time to time but it's predictable so seeing Sonic and Mega Man go through their machines might seem par for the course but that's the point!

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"

~Albert Einstein

Probably the best description of Wily and Eggman and partly what makes this crossover great... Or maybe i'm over analysing? Tongue Out

This is V saying "It's too damn hot!"

They fail because they try the same things over and over again. Yup, pretty much.

It's something you don't realise till it's infront of you (me anyway) but it can be acknowledged without being too on the knows, I think Generations did similar but it was played for laughs.

So, since you're a very big fan of the Sonic comics, where do you think I should start with? I only have a few issues and I would like to read more of them.

I'd say you should start during the death of the first Robotnic they replace him with the current "Eggman" one, so Sonic Archive 12 and 13

Oor start with the reboot Genesis, which is a retelling of the games and the TV series (the reboot was done for legal reasons) and is a perfect jumping on point for new readers and old fans.

I might have to look into the book reprint if this keeps up. Not sure if I should bother trying to get the comics themselves.
