I think my problem is the fact GOW "tries" to take itself so seriously. Aka, we rarely get that wink letting us know the whole thing is an immature power fantasy. When I saw the commercial for Ascension it focused a lot around Kratos having a family he loved. Aka, anyone who watched that commercial who never knew about GOW would go into Ascension believing they're going to play as a tortured yet redeemable "good guy". Can you say "misleading"?Yes, Kratos's grief over his dead daughter and dead wife plays into the picture but he's so busy doing cruel unspeakable acts of violence and sleeping with random "uber babes" that it diminishes his more humanistic qualities rather quickly.
Perhaps that's why I prefer outrageous stuff like Lollipop chainsaw, Mortal Kombat, Saints Row, and Onechanbara. At least those types of games are self aware and honest with themselves. I know what I'm getting into right away! (Purple dildo and all!)
That's a great point, Tami! I've adapted to the motto by waiting for price drops of games I'm unsure of and only buying certain titles brand new when I respect the company behind them.
Also, given the troubles even the biggest game companies are having lately I think our "message" is finally hitting home.
It's always difficult when a computer dies. We back up so much of ourselves and our work on a hard-drive it feels as if we're losing a piece of soul when the monitor screen finally stays dark and the operating system refuses to boot. Needless to say, I've been there!

That's the problem with "crying wolf". Eventually the village doesn't listen anymore so when a real wolf finally does come out the townsfolk are totally unprepared for it. The same thing can happen to the gaming community.
I agree the bigger concern should be how "real gamers" are treated online. There's a lot of "real" homophobia,racism, and sexism going on and it should be stopped.
As for how games portray women & men it's not more of an exaggerated and skewed image when compared to how books and movies portray us. I personally "like" the fantastical escapism games provide but to each their own!
James does do some beautiful and spooky camera work. I still think that the next Silent Hill game should use his town as inspiration.

All games I still want to play. Dust, Gears Of War 3, and Witcher 2 are still on my "must have" list. I've also added Ninja Gaiden Razor's edge to my imaginary dream collection. lol.

Another problem with online only requirements for modern consoles is what happens when the next consoles come along? There are going to be a lot of games that are unplayable or at the very least have missing modes due to nonexistant servers.
The problem is game companies today do not think ahead and they care only about jumping on the bandwagon to make more cash. (Yet by doing "me too" games they actually lose profits instead.)
