Theatrythm to Serenade North America This Summer

The popular (in Japan) rhythm game gets a North American release window

Final Fantasy has produced some odd spinoffs, but none are quite so odd and charming as the franchise’s first foray onto the Nintendo 3DS, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy.  Upon its release in Japan this past February the rhythm/RPG hybrid saw a 90% sell through, pushing just under 70,000 units in its first week alone.  While it had been previously noted that the game would be coming to North America at some point, it wasn’t until today that we had any inkling as to when that could be.

I Am Alive Review

I Am Disappointed: Beautiful at a distance, disappointing up close.

I’ve always loved the climbing aspect of the Uncharted series. Scaling larger than life structures gave the games an added sense of adventure. There was one problem though; Drake’s ascents were little more than eye candy. There was no danger, no strategy, no challenge just mash the X button until you arrive at your destination. That’s why I was so excited when I first heard about Ubisoft’s new IP, I Am Alive, which looks to meld similar Uncharted-like mechanics with the unforgiving realities of the survival horror genre. Unfortunately much like the scenery of this dystopian title, I Am Alive represents a great deal of potential that is tragically lost.

Mass Effect 3 Getting a New Ending?

Dr. Ray says the team is back at work to quell the disheartened fans.

Mass Effect 3 has been out long enough for the hardest of the hardcore to have finished it. Others are still getting their crew ready to face the Reapers, but even for those trying to avoid spoilers one thing has become very clear: people don’t like the ending of the game too much. It’s caused a huge backlash among fans and non-fans alike. You can listen to our own Jason Ross talk about it on the PB & Jason podcast, and the fervor for this game has site director Nick DiMola asking gamers what the big deal is. Well, it seems that when enough people cry out, their voices get heard. Today, Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder and GM of BioWare, made a statement on the BioWare blog addressing the concerns over Mass Effect 3’s ending.

Dragon Age II Expansion Cancelled

BioWare is looking to their past to craft Dragon Age's future.

Now that Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3 are out the door, it’s time for BioWare to start looking towards the future. That future doesn’t include last year’s Dragon Age II, however; BioWare recently announced that all work on Dragon Age II, including a rumored expansion, has been halted.

Epic Mickey 2 Details Revealed

Hope you're a fan of musicals...

The decision to make Epic Mickey’s characters silent was a deliberate one.  Warren Spector created the unique Disney adventure game on the Wii as a homage to the silent cartoons that served as his inspiration. This decision, for better or worse, will not be repeated in the recently announced sequel now officially called Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.  Not only will the characters be voiced, but they will sing and dance as this next game is considered a musical.

Sine Mora Review

Grasshopper and Digital Reality deliver a one-of-a-kind shoot-'em-up.

Sine Mora is a fascinating specimen, which should be no surprise to anyone familiar with Grasshopper Manufacture's other work. Once again, the team behind No More Heroes and Shadows of the Damned has delivered an experience that shakes up the established norms of a genre and provides a crazy, convoluted story that will have most players scratching their heads. This horizontal scrolling, bullet hell shoot-'em-up introduces a unique upgrade, special move, and timing system that drives the boss-intensive quest. While Sine Mora suffers from a few minor issues, its ingenuity and originality make it one of the best titles in the genre.

Shoot Many Robots Review

At least the name isn’t false advertising.

If I were to tell you that there’s a game for XBLA that combines the side-scrolling shooting of Contra with the 4 player co-op and loot based RPG mechanics of Borderlands, what would you say? Sounds pretty awesome, right? As someone who loves those two games, Shoot Many Robots sounds like it would be right up my alley. It sounds like a game crafted by the gods of programming, at least on paper. The actual execution of Shoot Many Robots is far from that idyllic image.

Dillon's Rolling Western Review

Rollin', rollin', rollin', rawhide!

When I first started playing Dillon's Rolling Western, I was pleasantly delighted. Delivering several different gaming ideas into one neat, stylistic experience, Rolling Western didn't offer anything new all to itself, but initially, it provided a nice mix of exploration and real-time battles with some light tower defense mixed in.

EA to Shut Down Several Online Game Servers

Shut down will impact titles featuring online pass.

EA recently published a list of service updates, indicating an April 13 2012 termination date for online functions of several games.  EA has cited the usual reasons for server shut down, such as lack of customer interest in the titles, and the desire to free up staff stuck supporting unpopular games.  While this may not seem particularly newsworthy, several titles on this list are on servers supported by EA’s infamous “online pass” feature, which charges second hand users an additional fee to use online, server hosted content.
