Luke's 2009 Game of the Year Awards

Luke gives us his thoughts on the best titles that were released in 2009 on all platforms.

DS

Game of the Year: Knights in the Nightmare

As a fan of strategy titles, I was legitimately blown away by this title. Knights in the Nightmare is a strategy RPG that's like no other. Since all your units are paralyzed in one way due to what happened in the world, you animate them with the spirit of a dead king. Knights in the Nightmare is also one of the best looking games on the DS and has one of the best soundtracks that I have heard in a DS game.

Runner-Up: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

In my opinion, the latest Mario & Luigi RPG is the best entry in the series. Like the previous two titles, the gameplay is fun and engaging. I was surprised by how many different uses there are of the DS implemented in this game, some of which are rarely seen in DS games. Not only is Bowser's Inside Story a fantastic title, it's one of the best RPGs I have ever played on the DS.

Honorable Mentions:

Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, Space Invaders Extreme 2, Space Bust-A-Move, Dawn of Discovery, Rhythm Heaven, Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars, Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume, Peggle Dual Shot, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Retro Game Challenge, Big Bang Mini

It was 8 years ago that Metroid Prime 4 was originally announced and its development was more than a little turbulent. Initially developed by Bandai Namco, it was later scrapped completely and development was shifted back to Retro Studios to start the project over. In the end, Retro has delivered a solid new entry in the series, but one that doesn’t totally capture what originally made the series so compelling.
